Subject: Gurupie 20 2012 Preseason Discussion

  Posted by: Species - Dude [07724916] Sun, Feb 19, 2012, 21:49

Greetings, all......pitchers and catchers have reported, so it is time to get things moving on the 2012 G20 season.

First order of business: Please confirm whether or not you are returning!

We'll get keeper dates (something around March 10th-13th) and draft dates (maybe the 14th-16th-ish) going pretty soon as well.

Lots of trade possibilities out there! Time to see some picks and players moved around!

I think my round 7 goes to Go (Nieman trade).

Both my round 9 go to mjd (one from R9 for Lee to mjd for vogelsong and one to mjd for young)

I get GO's 11th rounder (Neiman maybe)

I get mjd's 13th for Vogelsong.

It's here in thread #1170:

Confirmed and accepted on ESPN. Daniel Hudson is going to be good this year and for the next couple of years. Hopefully Halladay is better at least for a little while. Also of note is Putz, who I got by trading Shelby Miller - kind of wish I could have that one back.

Looking for a closer to keep? Javy Guerra was named closer for the Dodgers, and he can be yours for a pick upgrade.

And by named closer, Bh really means:

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly has said that Guerra is beginning camp as the Dodgers closer over Kenley Jansen, though he acknowledged there still is a competition, the LA Times reports. Jansen's strikeout last season was off the charts, so he has the higher ceiling than Guerra, but Guerra also didn't merit losing the job on his own performance last season. Speaking about Guerra, Mattingly said: "He's not Mariano [Rivera] or somebody that says, 'Hey, that's mine,' and you don't even think about anyone else. It's competition."

What a vote of confidence! ;)

Yep, right after he said "That guy is our closer." Where is that quote? If he were Mariano Rivera, he would be kept and we wouldn't be having this conversation.

I have reviewed the prospect list and the following players are ineligible to remain on the prospect list (officially AT the Keeper Deadline):

Eric Hosmer
Brandon Allen
Aroldis Chapman
Mike Minor

If their respective teams wish to retain their rights, they will need to be included amongst their 9 keepers.

I went from memory in terms of what players I actually looked up. It is every manager's responsibility to keep track of their own prospects. If you forget to check and someone (Commish, another manager) points this out with no advance warning...........tough doo-doo.

Judy - at the keeper deadline (and the prospect keeper deadline) the limits are:

Maximum 300 AB's for a hitter
Maximum 110 IP or 40 games pitched for pitchers

NOTE: the limits for the prospect DRAFT itself are different.

No response from Yokel....willl try again, but this is getting close to the point of no return. If I don't hear from him by Sunday, we will need to consider replacing him.

If it comes to that, Khahan - a former owner - expressed interest. Additionally, everyone's favorite hoops trading partner, Meatwads, expressed interest. Lastly, MBT - with whom many of us have probably played with in RIBC - expressed interest to me via email.

In general, I believe in the past we have favored past owners and other G20/G24 participants. Any preferences? Throw names in a hat/random draw?

Hopefully it doesn't come to that....but we are getting close.

Anyone have yokel's Yahoo account? Was it beezle_bubba? beezlebubba?

I have some pretty juicy possible keepers available:

Kelly Johnson: Struggled in AZ, but reborn in Toronto where he hit .270 with a .364 OBP. He still had very strong counting stats in 2011 w/21 homers and 16 steals.

Jose Valverde: Big Papa Grande was a perfect 49 for 49 in saves with a 2.24 ERA last year. The Tigers are primed for a 95-win season so Valverde should get plenty of saves.

Ted Lilly: Constantly undervalued, shook off a slow start to post a 3.97 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP. He's pitching in a top pitchers park in the best division for pitchers in baseball.

Alexei Ramirez: While flawed in OBP, otherwise Ramirez is a consistent producer in counting stats: 15-18 home runs, 70-75 RBI, 75-80 runs and (usually) 13-14 steals. All of this while averaging a steady and reliable 149 games played over his career. Not much upside generally, but he's very consistent. Easily a top 12 SS in this league.

Lance Berkman: Returned to past glory to prove 2010 was a fluke. You have to figure he has another .400 OBP, 25 HR, 90 RBI, 85 run season in him.

nah, I'm going to sit this year out of RIBC. I'm headed to India tomorrow and won't be back for a week, so this likely won't mesh well with the RIBC drafting schedule. Thanks for asking.

bh - I was gone all weekend.....just coming back to the living.

Only update is our coin flip. Easy fix.

I need to look at last year's dates and work from there. Might start the draft towards the end of next week. I believe we have a later start to the season this year.

Also keeper declaration deadline? Seems like we should be moving forward a little faster??

Why draft early and have a couple weeks of nothing when news is happening and we are rushing to the computer for pickups? Why waste a first round pick on a player only to find out he didn't make the team? It still could happen but the later we wait the less and less these kinds of things occur. Gives the draft more integrity.

Its worked well in the past by drafting as late as possible, and we always finish on time, so I see no reason to change things up.

Though I am intrigued by the possibility of giving Ref a conniption. I'd like to still do that somehow.

Well mainly drafting closers int he first round who turn out not to be closing games. But yeah I have also seen players drafted right off the bat who got sent down.

I don't have time to have a conniption.

I am looking for a closer and a first baseman. I have available Chase Headley, who is about the #13 3Bman in an OBP league and 3 of Rotowire's top 17 prospects (Jurickson Profar, Wil Myers, Jake Odorizzi). For a rebuilding team willing to hold a prospect (who will likely be in the league this year) as a keeper I have Robbie Erlin. Or I would consider a package for Yovani Gallardo or Gio Gonzalez. Or I could send draft upgrades.

ESPN Fantasy Projection: Having succumbed to Tommy John surgery last July, Anderson is out until sometime around the midway point of 2012; most pitchers coming off that operation need up to 12 months before returning to the major leagues. After they do, they sometimes struggle with their command, though at least in Anderson's case his was awfully good (meaning less of an uphill climb to reclaim it) and he had the kind of low-to-mid 90s fastball and curveball that should keep him competitive as he recovers. He might not provide you a single thing this season, or he could offer 15-20 useful starts to AL-only and deep-mixed owners; that is the range of probabilities involved. But here's a heads up, keeper-league owners: Anderson remains one of the most promising young starters in baseball (he's 24 years old), having earned a No. 17 ranking in Keith Law's top 50 players under age 25.

Ref kept Adam Wainwright, who is much older, for an entire season with no innings pitched. It's certainly reasonable someone might want Brett Anderson. I guarantee he gets drafted...

Here's Keith Law's article of the 50 best players under 25, from a couple months ago.

As mentioned, Anderson is 17th. Desmond Jennings (two years older than Anderson) is 15th. Here are players rated lower than Anderson:
- 19 Pablo Sandoval
- 20 Michael Pineda
- 21 Elvis Andrus
- 22 Jay Bruce
- 23 Brandon Belt
- 25 Mat Latos
- 26 Neftali Feliz
- 28 Trevor Cahill
- 34 Daniel Hudson
- 39 Jhoulys Chacin
- 40 Tommy Hanson
- 42 Jeremy Hellickson
- 43 Colby Rasmus

Are any of those guys not getting kept?

Samantha and Maxine only purr. They are 2 years old. They know not a thing about sports unless it involves chasing around the house. I chose them for good luck.

Have some fringe keepers. Very cheap so shoot me any kind of offer.

Justin Masterson - 26 years old that lived up to his prospect hype last year

Bud Norris - 27 year old with awesome k rate, would be a very solid keeper if he didn't pitch for the Astros.

Jayson Werth(less) - Sucked real bad last year but still got SBs. Surely will do a lot better this year.

Coco Crisp - 49 SBs and 8 hr's last year. Billy Beane resigned him so you know he's solid.

Allan Craig - 27 year old, should get full time at bats with Pujols gone. Had offseason surgery but should play 140+ games. Great power potential

Some pretty kick-ass rosters out there.

Pete has elite hitting. If he hits on drafting pitching, watch out.

Toral has a scintillating quartet of SPs, with elite OFs and solid infielders, including Lawrie of th prospect list.

There are others, too......I don't see another runaway year this year.

I am not sure where I got his 11.5 but I have it in my notes.

It's a buyer's market right now, at least until 5 PM today.

I might have interest in any one of those players if they were priced with that in mind.

Move them for a modest pick upgrade or toss them back to your competitors for nada.

mjd, there was no way for me to edit Masterson as he doesn't show. Normally we manually push trades until after draft so they show up immediately. Then we manually run keepers then compare. My time has been so short lately and really appreciate Species for stepping up.

So we can either push them now since Masterson will show up on your roster tomorrow or wait. Normally the sooner we see free agents, the sooner people can start formulating a draft strategy ahead of time instead of doing it when they are up--well at least at the start of the draft. ;)

Judy, trying to get the rosters cleared out. Don't worry about them. They are sent automatically. Will probably get more as I try to get the non-keepers off our teams.

What Species laid out previously is what we are going to do. He will get the draft thread set up tonight or tomorrow and clock will start on Monday.

What I had to end up doing was starting the offline draft then enter draft results so it would clear out the non Keepers.

This means that players will once again need to be added manually as they are drafted--but since they are now on waivers, you can't do that until Sunday. Just keep that in mind for all you early drafters. Perhaps we can add via commish before that?

Anyhow, everyone PLEASE check to make sure your keepers match your picks on rotoguru keeper thread.

Re:199 and Toral's comments from a while ago........

I am probably a Saturday evening timeframe before I get Draftime set up......so draft will likely be activated either Satuday night or even Sunday morning. Considering that it doesn't seem like we wouod get through Round 1 anyway, I don't think it's an issue.

That said, that makes our adherence to the clock and cumulative clock all the more important!!! So heed the annual "the world is ending"-type warnings that Ref gives us annually about the clock ;)

Please keep a keen eye out. Use the draft grid (Guru, if you don't mind updating the grid with the trade in 208, I'd appreciate it) to verify that the order set in Draftime is accurate. I tried to be careful, but it took me a LONG time and I certainly could have missed something.

POSITION ELIGIBILITY
Before each season begins ESPN will determine the primary position of every MLB player available in the game. The criteria will primarily be the past year's playing time. Additional positional eligibility will be determined as outlined below in the Batter and Pitcher sections. This includes rookies as well as veterans. The listed primary positions are fixed and will not change for the duration of the season.
NOTE: In custom leagues the League Manager CANNOT change the listed position of any player in the game.

Positional Eligibility for Batters
Additional positional eligibility for Batters occurs when one of the following conditions is met:

Games played at a position during last season: 20
Games played at a position during current season: 10 (The eligibility will take place on the 11th day, even if no game is played that day)
NOTE: For a batter to be considered eligible for Outfield (OF) he must play at least ten games in any outfield position (RF, CF, LF or any combo of the three, totaling 10). For example, at one point in 2009, Gary Sheffield (DH) played four games in Left Field and six games in Right Field. The total was ten, so he would be OF eligible.
Positional Eligibility for Pitchers
Additional positional eligibility for Pitchers occurs when one of the following conditions is met:
Pitching appearances last season: 5 starts / 8 relief
Pitching appearances during current season: 3 starts / 5 relief

re: 250

I was guessing he wouldn't make it back to me. My obp isn't good at all. Position flexibility was definitely a factor, but you don't want low power/slow runners playing corner infielder either. I like the Swisher pick, but the rest of my picks have been iffy thus far. Need to get lucky and hold off those dreaded red crosses of doom I'm so good at getting.

Can we remind people to add players to rosters once drafted.

I keep getting excited about available players in the ESPN list, but when I go to put them in my draft time Q, they have been taken already.

My draft positions are bad enough without you guys bursting my bubble all the time...!

I like the Arencibia pick Ref. Not hard to see him hitting 25 HR and sneaking his OBP near .320, which is pretty awesome value for round 3.

Rotowire likes your team enough to put it 4th right now in the draft software I'm using.

Give me some of what R9 is smoking. While Arencibia is a lock for 20+ HR, I'd be shocked if his OBP was over .300. I think he's risky.....and with d'Arnoud lurking, he could lose PT.

Well I'm hoping they are closer to R9's opinion obviously. I read they fixed a flaw in his hitting mechanics and now have it back to where he was in the minors when he had a decent OBP. This is the big boys though so still might not get there.

What I really needed to do was trade down from my 2nd round pick as I looked hard at Arencibia there. In fact, of all the guys I looked at to fit MY team, Murphy was the only one who I thought might not make it back to me. I'm feeling like I am reaching a lot and that can be disastrous.

I'm both solaced and dismayed by hen's 271.

Regarding spreadsheets, I usually put together massive spreadsheets, but they're generally developed during the G20 as it's usually the earliest of the drafts I'm in and this period of time is traditionally a very heavy "reality" time for me... my baseball prep suffers tremendously compared to the other sport seasons, it seems. I haven't been able to get out of that cycle for years... Despite having solid keepers, the players I surround them with never manage to get the job done. Something about this league is kryptonite for me. I use the "turning an ocean liner" analogy when describing this franchise...

I've found RotoWire's projections to be off, quite a bit, at times, so tweaking might be necessary. They tend to under-predict GP for guys coming back of injury, which means that some players who appear to be well-healed have their counting stats off.

[You can hand adjust the stats in their draft software]

Judy, his wrist is always sore. Dude was a beast in the minors and solid in 2009 for the rockies. If I had to guess I'd say I'll drop him sometime this year. However, the only way I'm going to contend is if I win the lotto with some of my young guys. My keepers this year kinda sucked so I'm going with youth over average veterans that you hope produce what they did last year.

The zero minutes is because I am never home. I leave a huge Q, but the guys I really want get picked off of it. I also have huge gaps betwen my picks, with no 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, or 12 rounders. I could have a great team of the ones in my Q that you guys plucked! My team is really gonna stink it up this year unless my keepers outdo themselves.

If he does not make a pick in time, the draft will be shut off and he will not be able to pick up anyone until we officially open the league up. That means everyone dumping prospects and we set up our rosters again, etc. I am emailing him.

Btw, this rule was implemented several years back after people were intentionally timing out late in the draft so they could look at news and then pick up someone instantly. Yes, we have had drafts end without everyone getting to use all their picks because of this--but it's only been a couple of times.

It's all good. He would have gotten 3 more hours to make all three of his picks once 14.20 came up.

I don't have time to pick up queues this minute for people but I might be able to do that later. Please make sure you have picked up all players so we can get the prospects off our teams and set up in Guru's fancy-schmancy program that alerts us when someone picks up a prospect. Then once we get all the parameters set, we will announce when free agents will be allowed to be picked up.

We should do this:
1. Rerun keepers, as originally done.
2. Assign every team LM powers so that they can pick up all of their own drafted players.
3. If people don't have their players loaded in time for the Wednesday game, then they don't get those stats.

Forcing people to first drop players will be a timing nightmare.

15 minutes ago I thought I got stuck in a time spiral. now everything is clear.

- dropped all my non-keepers.
- kept 10 players (9 keepers + Jesus Montero)
- will call up Jesus Montero for Brandan Ryan
- picked up 6 others that were free agents (is this good or bad when 6 of your players were unowned at the end of last season?)

I am not waiting for these 8 players to report at my spring training facility: Kotchman, Raburn, Melky Cabrera, Guerra, Greg Holland, Vogelsong, Capuano, Dotel

332: Guru, that will also work. There were some mistakes made by people marking wrong keeper. Those will need to be fixed today.

I can set keepers to run at 3:00 ET and will send yet another email out.

People will need to drop prospects and load their own players via LM. Will send instructions for that too.

Sorry for the double email. I hit enter and it sent it before I was done with the first one. Must have fat fingered the tab button or something.

I think I can simply hit draft is over and it will auto run the Keepers so it doesn't matter. Re-checking roster setup now.

Keepers and Draft have re-run successfully and you may now enter your draft players to your roster via the LM tab as previously mentioned.

MAKE SURE you click on add as LM so it will bypass the waiver process. Also, once you are done, click back on your browser so you only need to click on your player instead of having to go through the entire process each time. Please do this right now if possible.
