Subject: RIFC 2007: draft discussion

  Posted by: Guru - [330592710] Tue, Aug 14, 2007, 15:18

The clock will start on Thursday morning, but I will activate the draft on Wednesday. The clock will be set at 6 hours, with a moratorium from 11pm-7am EDT. If the clock expires, the next person in line will get to draft, and the skipped drafter will make up his skipped pick whenever he can. The clock will continue to run on weekends.

People at the endpoints of the draft have only one single time limit to make their consecutive picks. Similarly, the clock will be manually advanced to skip past anyone who already has a pick in arrears, unless other arrangements have been made in advance of that pick.

We will maintain a draft discussion thread here, but it will probably not be used extensively. If you know that you have pending time constraints, please post them in this thread. (e.g., "I'll be away until 6pm ET, so if my pick is due before then, you'll have to wait.") To the extent that you can alert everyone to potential availability issues, you can help others to plan their check-in times accordingly. That's simply good draft etiquette.

If you know you will be away when your next pick is likely to be due, you can can set up a queue in kafenatid and designate one of more managers to pick on your behalf. Your queue will not be visible until it is your turn to pick. By default, I am able to submit picks for anyone, but you should designate me so that I receive the email alert when it is your turn.

I will clear all rosters at the fanball site shortly, and ask that each of you pick up your player as soon as you draft him. I will also attempt to make pickups for teams using a designated picker, so that we can maintain as complete a list of free agents as possible.

When drafting, there is no need to draft every position. For example, if you want to skip a kicker, be my guest. However, the Fanball software will force you to fill each of the 14 active slots when you set your lineup for each game. You will not have the ability to leave an active slot blank, so plan your bench needs accordingly.

Rationales will be expected for each pick, but deleayed by two rounds. When we near the end of round two, I will set up a thread for those.

Any picks made prior to Thurssday morning are discretionary, and not timed. There is no need to get an early start - but feel free to do so, if you are so inclined. The real purpose of activating the draft early is to allow people to set up designated pickers and queues, and to (re-)familiarize themselves with the "On the Clock" software at kafenatid.net.

A final caveat: Please refrain from mentioning undrafted players, either in this thread, or in your posted rationale.

Another alert: If you have set up a queue and have made it "available", I (or any of your designated pickers) will make the pick on your behalf - unless you have posted specific instructions to the contrary in this thread. If you do not want your queue used, make sure it is marked "unavailable".

I showed up and got my first pick in.

I've set Guru, and YoungRoman as my designated pickers...

FYI - If I happen to get a queue ready for my 2.14/3.01 picks, please keep in mind, that they're MAY be a deal in the works between myself and Legge. We'll wait till it's closer to the 3.01 to announce a deal or not, but just in case, do not use 2 players from my queue. Use 1 only (For 2.14). Thx.

Everyone can follow the draft with this link:
http://rotoguru1.com/cgi-bin/kpeek.pl?163

Sequential picks appear at the top, and a draft grid (by team and position) is at the bottom.

That same link should work for the RIFC qualifying leagues as well, by substituting the appropriate league ID at the end of the URL

Welcome back to the team McGahee. I see four first round tiers this year, picks 1-2, picks 3-7, picks 8-11, and picks 12-14. I was hoping one of the 8-11's would fall to me, and that's why I took the 12 pick. It didn't happen, and now I wish I would of taken the 14 pick instead of flipping a card for who my #1 back would be.

I left a queue for GoatLocker for my round #3 pick. For round #4, he has my cell number. The queue should only be used for round #3.

(GL - Email sent a few minutes ago)

If anyone executes a trade while I'm unavailable (until about 9pm tonight), it would be best if you could make picks on behalf of your trade partner, and then I'll swap the players (or picks) when I return tonight. In case of any "emergency", use the feedback link at the bottom of the kafenatid page, and Fred (KKB) may be able to help.

I am also going to need some assistance picking this weekend, as I am out of town from 6 am tomorrow morning until about 1 pm on Sunday.

The best option is to email me (blackberry) the list of players chosen up to my pick (it may be best to email me when its 2-3 picks away from me in case I get sidetracked). I'll email back who I want. I assume I'll make Guru a designated picker, but I am up for adding a couple others. Any takers for this weekend?

I'll probably be sending you my cell number as well if I seem to be disregarding email (it's a weekend of debauchery).

Guru, IAC, and Goatlocker are all designated pickers. I am also going to add youngroman since he is right before me and call right after he picks (except he may be out of the country if I remember right?).

Hi GoatLocker, thanks for thinking about me, but I was silently creeping around the site as it were.

I only have internet at work and I do plan on heading home soon, so I have left IAC with instructions to give me a call if the draft gets back to me by tonight. As such, I had to make "free form" available, so in an abundance of caution, I un-DPed anyone else (except for Guru which always has access).

So no need for any of you to worry, I will not hold things up, although I may be drunk by then and giving IAC a hard time on the phone...

Greybear and Nerfherders - your teams were empty. Please remember to add your drafted players to your fanball roster as you pick them. This keeps the player listings at fanball up to date - which gets more important and the draft progresses.

from leggestand's rationale:
Best 4th Round Value: Randy Moss
Biggest 4th Round Reach: Jamal Lewis

why do you evaluate Lewis at 4.12 to be the biggest reach? I would have chosen Barber, V.Young. or maybe even Moss. I thought Lewis fell farther than he should have. Granted, no one will confuse him with Tomlinson, but I can't see how a guaranteed starting non-committee RB can be a reach at the end of the 4th rd. fwiw, lewis went 3.06 in another rifc league, and most cheats I've seen have him ranked in the 50-60 overall range, which is right where I drafted him.

but hey, we all evaluate players differently. very differently.

RE 93 Holt:

If he's anything like me... I'm sure he's just insinuating that on HIS cheatsheets it was the least attractive pick of the round.

FYI - There was a couple rounds that went by, where I found almost all picks I could agree with, but of them, I still picked the one I least liked.

Holt - IAC hit on on the head about my "reach" picks. I don't go by the books or other leagues, it's just my simple, biased opinion. The Browns had a whopping total of 7 rushing TD's last year, 3 of which were by a QB. Jamal, on a good team last year, only had 9 TD's. I don't think the Browns are going to be that much better than last year, and any time you have to play the Ravens and Steelers twice, I can just see it being a long season for him.

When I put my reaches, don't look at it as a "bash," it's just my opinion. I have been doing it for three years now in the RIFC.

I can see (via special Commisioner X-ray powers) that there is at least one name in youngroman's queue, but he has not made it available, so I can't make any pick for him. (I don't know what the name is - only that there is at least one name there.) Hopefully, he didn't intend to make it available and then fail to follow through. He often makes use of queues to keep things moving along.

I'll be out from about 4pm-8:30pm today, and was hoping that we'd get back to my 8th rounder before I go. But that's looking less likely now. If I can, I'll try to set up a queue in advance. Who volunteers to be my DP during that timeframe?

I didn't take it as a bash. I just thought it was a decent pick at the end of the 4th and had to defend my player. :D

well, on second thought, considering that marion barber went at 4.02, maybe I did take it as a bash.

Haha, good point. I guess that shows where my rankings stem from, as the reason I don't like Jamal that much is my poor TD projection for him, while I still think Barber is good for 10 TD's.

Jamal's not a bad pick, and actually the 4th round didn't have many reaches as it pretty much ran the QB gamut in order. Really, I just have been burned by Jamal a couple times, and going to worse team scares me. But, hey, maybe he'll go for 1200 and 10 TD's, then it's the steal of the 4th round.

He was, but I already have him in two leagues this year, so, for diversification purposes, I probably was not going to take him.

I just remembered you had him last year for a bit and having a couple big games. I assumed he left a good taste in your mouth, and since he was one of the higher ranking WR's still out there, and you needed one, I was sure he'd be your guy.

FWIW, I was hoping to nab Ginn as my WR4, although probably not until at least round 13-14. Was really disappointed to see leggestand take him in round 12.

A speculative pick, to be sure, but one with some nice potential upside, and his return yardage should cushion the downside.

That's nice to hear. I had been looking at him for a while and trying to figure out when was the best time to draft him. I wasn't sure if he would make it back to me at 13, so, I took him. But, like you said, the potential upside along with return yardage make me think he could work his way into my starting WR's. The problem is, I now have two Dolphin WR's...they certainly aren't the Colts.

Hey Holt

I don't think we could work out a deal right now. IF I were to deal Peterson, I'd probably need another RB included in that deal, one that I'd feel comfortable with as a starter. Jamal is the closest thing you have, and he'd conflict with LT + Foster's bye week.

[223] Phillips was listed at DL before the draft, but was changed this past week, and prominently announced at the Fanball site before he was drafted here. So, he must be used at LB.

As an aside, Nerf, if you had been picking up your own drafted players at Fanball as we've progressed (as instructed), you'd no doubt have seen the announcement.

we should be able to use queues more liberally at this point. I know we're ahead of the pace but I get really frustrated seeing the draft bog down in the same places every round. I mean it's rd 20 - punch some names in your queue and let it ride. there's probably 10 of us checking the draft constantly, and for all we know the draft is done for the night.

I've got to step out for a little while. You are all still designated as my pickers, so go ahead and select the first guy in the queue. If I make it back before my pick, I'll make the queue unavailable. Shoud I get struck by lightning and not get back before my second pick and players are still in my queue, make sure that you do not pick a player at the same position in the 22nd round as the one selected in the 21st round. As I said, it's highly unlikely that any of this will happen, but I'm being abundantly cautious.

For the sake of keeping things moving, I'd say post the name of whoever you want on here, draft Kenny Irons at kafenatid, and then pick up your real guy at Fanball.

You can request a player listing at kafenatid.net. However, rather than waiting for that to be completed, draft a player who is unlikely to be viable, post the intended name here, and the draft moves on. Once the target player is made available at kafenatid, I can make the switch.

leggestand (246) actually, it was one pick after you , not before you... Yeah I struggled with that pick, and didn't have a great reason to pick Ellison - must've been some psychic capture of your queue...

Re: 258, I did not know much about this D'Qwell fellow, and I did consider drafting him just for his name. I for one, am extremely jealous. Well played.

Looks like we'll wrap this up either tiday or tomrrow. Here's what's next:

1. Please fill up your rosters at Fanball. Most of you have done a good job of keeping this current. I've filled in a few teams from time to time as well. It should only take each of you a few moments to check your teams and make sure you have all 24 players.

2. Report any unlisted players. As far as I know, all drafted players are already listed at Fanball. If not, we'll need to find a placeholder and make special arrangements.

3. Once rosters are all set, they will be locked for two days. During that time, you may make claims for any undrafted players. Claim priorities will be in even round order. It appears that Fanball will be able to handle this processing automatically this preseason. (In past years, it had to be done manually).

4. Finish up your rationales. I will also set up a separate thread where you can post a recap of the draft, if you wish.

We've moved along very nicely, averaging slightly under an hour per pick, inclusive of pause time. I especially appreciate those of you who have made use of queues when you knew your availability would be compromised.

If you have completed your draft, feel free to post your rationales for rounds 23-24 here. They can then be copied over when the time comes.

I'll post this in blue so it stands out amidst the late rationales.

All rosters now have 24 players, and I hope they are the correct 24. Let me know if you notice any error.

I have now locked out teams from being able to pick up free agents. We are now in the post-draft claiming period. At noon (ET) on Saturday, all submitted claims for undrafted players will be processed, using even numbered draft round priorities. If you wish to claim an undrafted player (along with dropping one of your drafted players, of course), you must submit your claim at the Fanball site. You may submit as many claims as you wish. If you do, prioritize them appropriately.

After the claims have been awarded and I have confirmed that everything seems to have run properly, I will enable free agent pickups. During this time, dropped players will be subject to waivers (and waiver claims) for 48 hours.

This is the first year that Fanball has provided for preseason claims, so I hope it runs the way I expect it to.

After glancing over the teams you guys drafted, I found it interesting that I ended up with the same QBs as IAC (Cutler, Grossman) and the same RBs as Youngroman (Maroney, James). Sadly nobody had the same 3 WRs that I will be starting.

Beezer - "I don't like Romo or Eli in this format" Under what format would you like those guys? Are there bizzaro leagues where you get points for overthrowing receivers and botching holds on FG attempts?

Guru - I actually have 4 Williamses - Roy, DeAngelo, D.J., and Madieu.

holt - As a Skins fan, I did not scratch my head on the McIntosh pick. I hope he lives up to his hype - the Skins certainly paid enough for him.

As Billy Crystal said in When Harry Met Sally, "I WAS TRYING TO BE NICE!"

I'd like them more in leagues that didn't penalize for interceptions. Or Romo in leagues with bonus points for dating American Idol winners.

RE Slackjawed YokelL

Embarrassingly, I would double-check the rules. Somehow, it wasn't until the 11th round or so when I realized we had added two IDP starters. Somehow, I remembered the added TE flex, but forgot this. Oh well, at least I realized in time and learned a lesson in the process.... and that lesson was never trust a junkie.

We actually didn't adjust the # of IDPs this year. The previous two years before, they had been upped however.

Huh, I guess you're right. I even went back to check my draft last year in AAA... So, I have even less of an excuse to be ill prepared - d'oh!

Beezer - LOL - I know you were trying to soften the blow. I would like them more (or hate them less) without penalties for INTs too. I am not sure I will retain my sanity through the season when the first 2 roster decisions I have to make each week are who to start between Eli/Romo and Julius/DeAngelo. But such is life in a league with 14 knowledgable managers.

Rationales are now complete. Thanks to all! I think this is a record - having all rationales submitted within 24 hours of the completion of the draft.

Remember to submit your post-draft player claims (at the Fanball site) before Saturday noon, if you want to have any priority claims on undrafted players.

Post-draft claims have been processed.

Free agents may now be added by any team, first come, first served. Dropped players are still subject to a 48 hour waiver period. Waiver claims can be submitted under the Transactions menu item.
