Subject: RIFC 2007: Regular season discussion

All set to go.

I printed the Fanball rules page into a PDF file. Commissioners from QLs are encouraged to check this against their leagues. Please report any discrepancies. Most of these items have not been changed since last year, but it's possible that some error has crept in.

RIFC 2007 rules (Fanball)

One issue that warrants attention.

This year, we have two "flex" slots.

For receivers, we need:
2 WRS
1 TE
1 WR/TE

For IDP, we need:
1 DL
1 LB
1 DB
3 IDP

Because of the way Fanball allows us to set this up, it is possible to set an invalid lineup. For example, Fanball will allow you to have 2 WR, 1 TE, and 7 IDP. Alternatively, you could have 3 WR, 2 TE, and only 5 IDP. Neither of these configurations is valid, but Fanball would not prohibit them.

So, it would be good if Commissioners could routinely check their league lineups each week to ensure that all lineups are valid. In the event an invalid lineup is in place, Commissioners should have the discretion to "fix it" as deemed appropriate. Obviously, if the situation is detected in advance of games, the best way to fix it is to tell the offending manager to fix it.

I just noticed that I can't set a lineup without a kicker. I hoped that I could wait until the Sunday afternoon games to pick up a kicker. this way I need to pick up one before the opener on Thursday. damn!

I was looking over a few teams, and noticed that Goatlocker has Chris Davis, WR, TEN, and not Craig Davis, WR, SD, as he originally drafted. Hopefully he can get that changed before Thursday.

He also hasn't set his lineups yet. (As well as: BMD, YR, & Beezer)

I just set it up so you should be able to submit a claim now. To do so, you'll have to go to the claims item under the transactions menu, and choose "Create/edit your claiming system request".

If you wait until tomorrow, then I think you can also initiate a claim request from the player listings.

Claims are processed at noon on Wednesday.

My top 3 point-scorers so far are:
Mario Williams, 24th rd pick, 17.5 pts
Rocky McIntosh, 17th rd pick, 15.5 pts
E.J. Henderson, 13th rd pick, 13.5 pts

I still have Gore, Fitzgerald, and V.Davis to go tonight, but for now I can find amusement in this.

It's true that Top RBs are so much more valuable/consistent than Top WRs... but they do go down to injury so much more often as well. Thus why depth is so important at that position.

wow, just checked the scoring for the first time tonight and Greybear really closed the gap against me after the first game tonight. Fanball is now showing me up by under a point and a half. Hopefully D. Jackson can make some more catches tonight to help pad my lead against any scoring corrections...

All in all, pretty happy with my team after this first week's games. Monster outing this week, though, by Smith32.

IAC - I can see now why you don't like Romo and Eli "in this format" - they only get 16 pts for throwing 4 TDs instead of 24 ;) But thank you for pointing out my near 300 full roster total. Too bad Osi got hurt or maybe I'd have gotten 200 from the starters and 300 overall.

Holt - just wanted to remind you of your Rivers rationale... "glad I didn't get Romo". Still feeling that way? ;)

RE Smith32:
Who said I didn't like higher caliber QBs? I like them IF I can get them at a good value. In the Keeper league that we started amongst RIFCers, I have Romo (and Roethlisberger). It just so happens that, with the way the draft fell, I was more comfortable with taking a QB outside of the top 10 rounds.

Guru, I know this isn't earth shattering but I thought it was interesting.
Last year Electroman finished the year in AAA #2 on a 12 game winning streak. He lost in the playoffs, but none-the-less I thought it'd be interesting to see how long he kept that regular season streak alive. He won both games of Week 1 this year and also won Game 1 of Week 2 giving him a 15 game regular season winning streak. I don't know if you are able to go back and look at past leagues, or if you or someone in RIFC can remember, but this seems like it might be the longest winning streak in RIFC history. I can say that in my 3 years in the RIFC (AA the first year and AAA2 last year and this year) that I haven't seen a streak like that. Just an FYI and some work for someone who likes to research these sorts of things.

With Jackson out for week 4 and my season in dire straights, I can't afford to wait for him to get healthy. I know I'll have to sell him for less than 100 cents on the dollar to move him, so let those offers roll in and let's make a deal. I'll probably wait until after claims process to see where everyone is before accepting any offers, but I plan to make a move this week if a deal I can live with comes in.

Ugh. Down 14 to Smith32 with Brees and Hope to play and Brees puts up a negative. This season seems lost, like the Saints offense. I am going to send out some trade offers. I am looking to send Chambers and Alex Smith to someone for a QB...not a top tier QB, but better than Brees.

Here are the charts through three weeks. The top chart shows the average points per slot by position. The bottom chart shows the total points by position over or under the average for that position. Thus, while the top chart shows per-player averages, the bottom chart multiplies the differences by the number of lots per position.

(I'm using the same template that I developed last season. Hope I'm remembering how to set up the data correctly.)

Our flex WR/TE creates a minor predicament for this chart. So far, Slackjawed Yokel has started two TEs every week, and two WRs. (I don't think anyone else has doubled up at TE.) For this chart, his TE number reflects the average of the two TEs, and that average is also added to the WR column. In effect, his average TE is considered to be a WR.

Suffice it to say that I suck. Without McNabb's explosion last weekend, I'd be below average across the board.

Did everyone receive this trade announcement?

Beezer's Crazy 88s has approved a trade with Bags on Wed 09/26 2:00p ET.

The commissioner will need to approve this trade to finalize the transaction.

Bags has traded:
RB Shaun Alexander, SEA
WR Jacoby Jones, HOU

And received from Beezer's Crazy 88s:
RB Steven Jackson, STL

The trade is now in the 24 hour review period. If any manager wishes to protest the trade, they must send me an email within 24 hours, or post the protest here.

If there are less than 3 protests, then the trade will be approved and processed tomorrow. If there are 3 or more protests, it will be subject to a vote of all 14 managers.

Thanks Guru. A MAJOR part of the deal for Greybear, was the ability to plug those players straight into her lineup. She has been dealing with a bunch of injuries, and although the trade isn't JUST for one week, she still wants to make sure she doesn't fall too far behind in the standings early.

Just double checking,
Vrabel should be credited for 6 points for his reception TD, but no points for his 1 reception yard. Currently nothing is showing up on AOL, but if I am reading everything right the commish (myself) should manually change this.

After 4 weeks, and a 1-7 start, I finally think my team looks good. My season will hinge on Brees, though, as if he continues to average 5 ppg, I may not win another game. I like my RB's, I like my WR's, I like my TE, I like my D/K, and I really like my IDP's.

I feel bad that Schaub got comfortable on my team and was shipped on his merry way only a week after I acquired him, but I needed a WR with Curtis on bye and Harrison dinged up.

It is painful to know that I thought I had traded Bowe at his high point for Schaub, and that if I had kept him and started him I would of been 2-0 last weekend and may have been able to get more for him. To go along with that, if I had started Curtis the weekend before, I would of been 2-0 that week...two starts away from 4-4 instead of 1-7. Such is fantasy football I guess. You win some and you lose some, it just seems that I am losing a lot more than I am winning.

I have amassed 3 wins while posting the lowest number of total points.

I am just glad I improved over the last one!

I am at -15.7, almost totally caused by the -7.7 and -9.7 that I am getting for QB's and WR's, respectively. I assume I have shored up my WR issues (Marvin, Chambers, and Braylon have to at least get me average WR scores each week) but my Qb is my question mark. As I have said before, my season will ride on Brees now. I go as he goes.

bmd - when you get a chance, if you like any of my RB's for Vince Young, feel free to send me an email or offer.

I have a bunch of guys that may work including Norwood, Leon Washington, Chester Taylor, and even Selvin Young at this point. I probably won't do McGahee for Young straight up, but if you did want Mcgahee, you could do a Young+someone.

Let me know.

Guru:
There is some confusion with the F/A vs WW rankings.
After the Free Agent Priority is finished on Wednesdays, does the WW rankings adjust to show the F/A pick ups, or is the WW ranking the order based on record from last to first.
The real question is if you make a F/A Priority pick up do you go to the back of the line for the WW and do the people who didn't make a F/A pick up move up?

kyle, I'm pretty sure the commish has to manually adjust (carefully) the waiver priority every week after claims go through.

unfortunately claims and waivers are two separate systems and it takes commish over-ride to make them work together.

claims do drop your waiver priority for that week.

Yes, claims and waiver priorities are automatically syncronized this year, so no manual intervention is required, as long as the commish has coded it this way.

Once F/A claims are processed, the post-claim priorities should automatically be in effect for subsequent waiver claims. In previous years, the commish had to do this manually.

QB Bulger not playing
QB Huard injured and out for a few weeks
QB Delhomme out for the season
RB Maroney inactive
WR Santonio Holmes injured in pre-game warmups
TE Todd Heap with 0 yards (don't know if he even played)

I don't know of other injuries, but I am sure there are some more. I am already way behind in points and all these injuries aren't really helping.

wow - I can't imagine a crazier finish to a fantasy game. BMD and I were basically tied going into last night's game. He had Crayton and I had Folk. I had something like a 3 or 4 pt lead til it looked like my ship was sunk with that last minute Crayton TD.

at that point I figured I needed dallas to convert the 2 pt so Folk would have a chance at an OT field goal. Well we know what happened. Dallas fails the 2 pt, gets the onside kick, gets 2 quick OB passes (with an owens catch overturned in there somewhere) and Folk nails a 53 yarder with no time left, BUT, timeout was called and he has to try again! AND IT'S GOOD, AGAIN! OMG
BMD 115.18
Holt 116.70

Patrick Crayton 14.20
Nick Folk 16.00

this helps remove a little of the sting of the 22 points I lost by starting Green over Rivers (that cost me my game against IAC).

ug. now back to work on my team this week. I feel like I need to make some kind of trade, but no idea what that trade would be.

Reminder: this is the last week that claim priorities reset. Once they reset on Tuesday, they will simply carry forward for the rest of the regular season without any resets. Successful claims (F/A or waiver) will move you to the end of the line, and the only way you will move up the priority list is when the claims of other teams are processed.

As for the Goats, I don't think I've ever won such a close game in my FF career: 0.74 points! I feel like I should apologize to Legge: Sorry man. I had to start Lemon by shear desperation, and it paid off... Between my bye week issues and the injuries, I must say that I've been finding the year to be quite a challenge so far.

No apology needed Greybear. Just look at my games the previous week and you'll see that our game this week was less heartbreaking than my game against the Yokels last week...I had the 2nd highest score, but happened to play Yokels, and he beat me by 0.36. And he beat me on a 4 yard pass to Marion Barber after the Cowboys onside kick against the Bills to set up the GW FG. I watched the whole game, and when the Cowboys scored, and even recovered the onsides kick, I figured I squeaked one out against him, but I was wrong.

As for Lemon, you starting him actually messed me up. I had Curtis slated as my WR3, and figured if Lemon played well, it had to be because Chambers played well. I was wrong again, and Curtis put up 10 more points. I scored 163 points against holt, but I needed the 163 against you.

On a positive note, I have moved up into a playoff spot because of my points. My team seems pretty strong, and I would be open to unloading a RB to someone who needs help. There is no real position I am looking for, but if I upgrade my starters, I am open to anything.

leggestand - yeah, I was surprised to see I won last week after the MNF game. I timeshifted the game a bit, as I was watching both it and the baseball game, so I didn't look at the scoring until after the game was over. In fact I was thinking I needed about 8 points from Barber, so I thought I lost. I also lost a game in G24 by a similar margin last week - by .46 points.

On that note, I am in the market for sending two RB's away for a solid RB. I have McGahee, Norwood, Leon Washington, and Selvin Young. I would be interested in sending two for one, as long as the "one" has had his bye week. I can also probably be talked into throwing in one of the following three WR's: Harrison, Curtis, Chambers.

Finally got two wins this week...maybe I can sneak into the 8 spot!

Something I noticed about your spreadsheet, Guru, is that you're assuming we start 3 WR each week and 1 TE, where that's not always the case. In fact I've started two TE's every week except for bye weeks. You should actually take the sum of the WR and TE points and divide it by 4 like you do for the IDP's.

(mainly to pick nits, but partly to explain my lack of wr points..)

Critical matchup for my team this week. The top two points scored teams and #1/2 seeds for the playoffs will be facing up. As Yokel is ahead of me in record, IF I can beat him this week, I would have won in both my matchups against his team, thus having the upper edge for the tie breaker.

There is only one AA league this year, so I'd expect the following teams should be "safe" to return/advance to next year's RIFC:

Top 4 seeds in RIFC playoffs (4)
Winner of RIFC playoffs (1)
Top 2 seeds in each AAA league (4)
Winner of each AAA playoffs (2)
Winner of AA playoffs (1)
Me (1)

At most, that list will include 13 teams, assuming no duplication. After that, everyone is on the bubble.

Yikes, I thought all I had to do was make the playoffs to stay in... so I need to hope the top seeds in RIFC and AAA's win the playoffs, then the top 7 seeds get in? Unless of course I win the whole thing and make it a moot point. :)

Ya, I'm assuming that I'm going to have to win the whole thing to get an invite back. Running out of time to make a serious charge for 4th seed.

just noticed my points against is 2764 right now, only 4 pts less than the current 4 seed has. so my average opponent is almost qualified for rifc next year. it's been a brutal season.

This would be a good time to review the rules for roster adjustments during the playoffs:
Players at the primary skill positions (QB, RB, WR) and team defenses may not be added for any reason during the playoffs. Free agents at these positions will be locked out after the final regular season game. You may drop a player at one of these positions, but once dropped, that player cannot be added later.

Players at the other positions (TE, PK, IDP) may be added or dropped according to normal regular season guidelines, subject to playoff claiming priorities, if applicable.

Team which are not still active in the Championship playoffs may not make any transactions - adds or drops - even if they are still competing in the Consolation bracket.

Also, claiming/waiver priorities will be reset one last time. Following the final regular season game, priorities will be reset based on playoff seed, with the top seed getting the top priority. Thereafter, throughout the playoffs, priorities will again adjust only when a claim is awarded.

It looks like the first 7 playoff teams are pretty much set. The top 5 have clinched, while Goatlockers has split with the 12-12 teams, and are down in points by enough that it is safe to say that Holt and Greybear are in. S_R is the one team that could still get beat but Goatlockers would need alot of help to do it. 2-0 vs 0-2 and outscore by 30 points.

It also looks like the top 4 seeds are set. As for me, it seems my team either runs hot or cold. I either score 160+ or languish with 110 or less. I was hoping to steal a top 4 but now I will have to hope that I do enough in the last week or in the playoffs to warrant an invite for the free spot.

Any ideas on what you are going to do with the free spot(s), Guru? Top 5 seeds? 5-8 seeds in the final four? Inquiring minds want to know.

I was wondering about playoff seeding if there are more than two teams tied in record--I don't see this covered in the RIFC rules. In AA there's a possibility of a 6-team tie for second or even a 4-team tie for 6th.
In the case of a 6-team tie, do you just go by points, or do you go head-to-head records against the other 5 teams? If it were to happen we'd have two 6-4 H2H teams, two 5-5 H2H teams, and two 4-6 H2H teams. Would the 6-4 H2H teams get the top two seeds, and the one with a better H2H(then points) would get the top seed?

Anybody know what's up with SR? He's sporting a roster with these players:

Adrian Wilson (IR)
Sean Taylor (RIP)
Travis Henry (Suspension looming?)

I know that most of this stuff is recent, or still pending... but for a team on the bubble to make the playoffs, I don't see why he'd be giving up yet?

Playoff brackets have been set. Claim priorities have also been reset in order of Championship bracket seeding.

Teams not in the Championship bracket may no longer add or drop players.

In the Consolation bracket, the losing team with the most points in the first week will advance. Pairings will be adjusted if necessary to avoid a repeat matchup.

Well, my unanimous weak spot in the rationales, RB, ended up being my strength! McGahee has been solid, and Norwood, Washington, Young, and Chester Taylor have been servicable in playing matchups. The surprise has been at WR, as Harrison as the first WR off the board in the early 2nd round has basically been a "skip" pick. My only saving grace at WR has been dealing for Edwards early in the year (sorry about Sammy Morris, yr...seriously).

Now here comes the hard part...knocking off IAC in the first round. IAC's squad has been a train the past half of the season and I top out at about 155 points, and he easily hits the 170's. Good luck to all except IAC.

Well I thought I did decently this week - My two best players came through - but Smith just manhandled me. 34 points from a defense is tough to overcome. The Bucs defense also let me down a bit as I thought they had very good matchups for the three weeks of the playoffs.

Thanks for the opportunity to play with the big boys. I'm happy that I was competitive, just bummed that my usual playoff magic could not be summoned. I am now 5-2 in RIFC/Qualifying playoffs.

Grats to Yokel and holt for making it to the finals.

Just looking at the outcomes and my own score from last week it is evident that luck was not on my side. There was a game in week 10 or so that I chose to play Longwell over Wilkins at K and it was a 15 point mistake (Wilkins 15, Longwell 0). That mistake cost me a game that week, which would have given me the 5th seed instead of the 6th, and that would have gotten me into the finals. Funny how one bad decision can hold so many consequences down the road.

Suddenlink Communications has started up a section on their website called "Play Fair". Suddenlink claims that they want to carry the network and be fair to the customer who want the network and to the customers who don't want the network. The site claims that Comcast and Cox can carry NFL Network on a sports tier and Suddenlink wants the same option and by placing NFL Network on the sports tier allows customers who want the network to pay for it. The site further claims that NFL Network doesn't have the kind of year-long programming that justifies putting it on basic cable services.

Recently Suddenlink made several offers to the NFL Network that included one that would make the NFL Network available; all the network had to do was name its price and keep all advertising and related revenues, with no compensation due to Suddenlink. The NFL Network denied this and other offers on November 27, 2007. Suddenlink claims that the network "reiterating that they would accept nothing less than the same $100 million ransom they demanded more than a year ago." Suddenlink states that they are ready to make a deal with the NFL Network and ask "the citizens and leaders of the communities we serve to contact the NFL and ask them to accept Suddenlink's generous offer of a free channel, widely available to customers who want it."

The other offers Suddenlink proposed but were turned down by the NFL Network were to carry the network on their digital sports tier, at a reasonable fee, and to make NFL Network’s eight live NFL primetime games and its college bowl game coverage available on pay-per-view at a rate determined by the network, with all revenue remitted to the channel.

I do not want Suddenlink caving in to these guys. The cable rates are high enough as it is. I can just picture the NFL honchos sharing some laughs over it in the executive board room with their Direct TV and Dish Network buddies.

Senators Leahy, Specter Warn NFL Of Limited Game Broadcasts

December 20, 2007 7:01 a.m. EST

Christine Agus Gaylican - AHN News Writer

Washington (AHN) - Two senators sent a warning letter to the National Football League on Wednesday asking authorities to make more games available to viewers and not doing so could make the league loose its anti-trust exemption.

Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-VT, and Sen. Arlen Specter, R-PA, both members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, have warned the league not to limit the broadcast programming reach of NFL games to the benefit of their own NFL Network.

The Senators' written letter quoted on Associated Press said: "Now that the NFL is adopting strategies to limit distribution of game programming to their own networks. Congress may need to reexamine the need and desirability of their continued exemption from the Nation's anti-trust laws."

They have raised concerns that fans in their home states will not be able to see games on the channel involving the New England Patriots or the Pittsburgh Steelers, a related ESPN report said.

The NFL has been in contention with some cable companies regarding the NFL Network's inclusion in their basic cable offerings. This has led to only 40 % of the nation's homes able to watch the games.

Due to the tight distribution airing of the NFL, there are some areas in Vermont or parts of Pennsylvania that could not receive telecasts of the games.

The CNN report said the league favors year-round broadcasts of the entire NFL Network shows lineup and not just of important games.

Yeah, I gotta pay like $6/month for the sports package to get NFL network. The crazy thing is for the first game last year on Thanksgiving, I turn it on ready to watch the game and they're showing some NY firefighters league football game. Then a banner goes across the bottom of the screen saying my cable company (Insight) decided not to pay the extra fee for the games! I called in the next week to complain, and enough others must have that we've since gotten the games, but not in HD.

Now Insight has been bought by Comcast, and it's supposed to switch over at the end of the year. And, Comcast has been unable to negotiate with the Big 10 Network, so despite living not 10 miles from a Big 10 campus, I can only see the games that are on national TV.

Back on topic - Holt, not having NFL network, you missed the forced fumble and recovery that James Harrison had that was overturned - not to mention a sack he should have had right off the bat. So, things could've been worse than just your namesake's stinker.

I'd say that my chances would have been nil if I was playing this week, having Parker go down on the second play. There was alot of offense in that game but the usual suspects didn't show up much.

The NFL network should do what ESPN/TNT did in years past - show the games they broadcast on a local channel for the cities whose teams are playing. I remember this happening in 1991 when channel 9 in DC, the CBS affiliate, showed the Giants/Redskins game that was on ESPN. No big deal in preempting CBS' coverage that night, it only happened to be game 7 of the 1991 World Series.

Yeah, the NBC-affiliate from Indy picked up the Colts game on Thanskgiving; of course it was blacked out outside of Indy for some reason - so people here were screwed unless they had NFL network.

Speaking of the Colts, I just got a pair of tickets for Sunday's game against Houston. I'm on the season ticket waiting list, so I've regularly gotten emails that there were some extra tickets available last minute, but I've never checked my email quick enough. Today, slacking off at home, I happened to check probably within minutes of receiving it. woohoo! Of course now, I won't be able to react to late-breaking fantasy news (not that I have much depth now to speak of), or 'watch' my two super bowls live. Now, hopefully Manning will be playing the whole game...

Yeah I "saw" that Harrison forced fumble/recovery watching the gameday thing at nfl.com. Seeing it overturned on replay was exciting. Not as exciting as watching the game would have been, but it was good.

btw, the two teams I pull for are the Rams and the Steelers. Such a crappy feeling to know they were playing on a Thursday night and I couldn't watch it. It's not like they play each other very often.

well, it was a good day to see the Colts play. The offense was able to move the ball at will today, and their D was solid all game as well (allowed the Texans to score on their first drive and then held them until the waning minutes) I hadn't been to a Colts' game in the Peyton era, and the crowd was pumped.

Listening to the updates on the way home it sounded like Brady and the Pats were going to run up the score, but from what I saw in the second half, they didn't look too sharp. It was funny seeing Brady getting sacked and fumbling in the 4Q in a game he shouldn't even have been in.

Hopefully, my guys'll hold on here.. I know fanball is missing a Colts's pick right now, so it looks like I'm up by 9 with 40 minutes of Henderson vs 60 minutes of Wilhelm.

Congrats Slackjaw! I've fallen a little short. 1 TD total between my RB's and receivers isn't going to cut it. Twice I watched the Browns get within touching distance of the end zone, only to throw it to Braylon Edwards. It was a painful day. Before the New England game started I really thought everything was in my favor, but Brady and the Pats def only totaled 32 points. Wasn't meant to be.

Again, congrats on your victory Slackjaw, and thanks to Guru again for throwing this party. Merry Christmas to everyone!
