Subject: RIFC 2009: Draft Discussion

  Posted by: Guru - [330592710] Wed, Aug 19, 2009, 12:19

I have activated the draft system, but the draft will not officially start until tomorrow (Thursday). Early activation is for the purpose of allow people to set up queues, if desired. The clock will be set at 6 hours, with a moratorium from 1am-7am EDT. If the clock expires, the next person in line will get to draft, and the skipped drafter will make up his skipped pick whenever he can. Please note: The clock will continue to run on weekends.

People at the endpoints of the draft have only one single time limit to make their consecutive picks. Similarly, the clock will be manually advanced to skip past anyone who already has a pick in arrears, unless other arrangements have been made in advance of that pick.

We will maintain a draft discussion thread here, but it will probably not be used extensively. If you know that you have pending time constraints, please post them in this thread. (e.g., "I'll be away until 6pm ET, so if my pick is due before then, you'll have to wait.") To the extent that you can alert everyone to potential availability issues, you can help others to plan their check-in times accordingly. That's simply good draft etiquette. Please also use this thread to recruit designated pickers, if needed.

If you know you will be away when your next pick is likely to be due, you can set up a queue in kafenatid and designate one of more managers to pick on your behalf. Your queue will not be visible until it is your turn to pick. Be aware that, as commish, I am able to submit picks for anyone. So even if you have no designated pickers, if you have a queue and it is marked "available", I will be able to make a pick on your behalf when your pick is due. Therefore, if you do not want your queue used, make sure it is marked "unavailable". If your pick is due and your queue is available, I will assume that you want it to be used unless you have posted explicit instructions to the contrary.

Special note: My son is getting married this weekend, which will significantly limit my availability, attention, and access. Thereforee do not rely on me to pick on you behalf on Friday-Sunday. If you need a designated picker, recruit someone else for those three days. I will be back late on Sunday night, and should be available to make queued picks for anyone after that time.

Culdeus has volunteered to process draft picks at the league site, so that the database there is kept as current as possible.

When drafting, there is no need to draft every position. For example, if you want to skip a kicker, be my guest.

Note that trades during the draft are allowed. Trades should be announced here, and may include any combination of picks and/or players.

Players who are not yet listed at myfantasyleague.com may be drafted, and if so, a placeholder player will be assigned to your roster until the player is available. Once the draft is complete, you may no longer sign (or protect) an unlisted player. If a player is listed at MFL but not yet available at kafenatid, there is a link at kafenatid to request the addition of that player. Try to anticipate these needs, so that we do not have to hold up the draft while waiting for a player addition.

Rationales will be expected for each pick, but delayed by two rounds. When we near the end of round two, I will set up a thread for those.

Please refrain from mentioning undrafted players, either in this thread, or in your posted rationale.

FYI - I left a 2 player queue (and set up two managers as queue takers)... If I get the player I want at the 3 slot, no problem... if not, I'd like to discus moving down till slightly later in the first round.

Email me about a potential trade should my guy not get "auto-picked".

Thx,

Yes, you missed it. I just had it sent again.

Anyone else missing the MFL invite? Unfortunately, I haven't figured out how to determine whether a team has signed in or not.

For the time being, please do not change your team name. This will help culdeus ensure he is assigning players to the correct teams. After the draft, you will be able to rename you team, if you wish.

He hasn't been on the MFL site in over 3 days, not sure if he's checked in here at all. Stinks if we have someone time out 3 picks into the first clocked day. I remember there being a rule about automatically assigning players to someone who hasn't picked; was that after 2 or 3 missed picks?

Can we get a designated picker for him? Missing a 1st round pick is pretty huge and if he somehow missed his 2nd pick as well then he might as well throw in the white flag.

One year, we had a manager who missed his first two picks (14/15, I think). We assigned him two players at the end of round 2 - who ultimately worked out reasonably well as I recall - one was Tiki Barber.

I can see that Yokel did make some lineup moves in G20 baseball at 11:35pm last night, so he certainly should be aware.

Bags - if/when Yokel times out, you certainly have the right to pick. Up to you if you want to wait.

I'm up after you, and I'll probably wait a little while - but not necessarily the full 6 hours. Trying to be accomodating to Yokel, but also fair to everyone else.

From the AA league last year someone was a Browns fan and also messed their queue up after timing out or something. This produced the following:

1.11 Kellen Winslow TE CLE
2.04 Derek Anderson QB CLE

It appears that both IAC and Smith32 have left queues, but if I am the only one to be able to use them, that won't help move things along.

It's kinda interesting how the RIFC is drafting significantly before the qualifier leagues this year (AA is the only one to start so far... sitting at 1.02 right now). If I remember correctly, normally the qualifiers had tried to get started a couple days before the top league.

Great job by the majority of managers in trying to setup queues, and/or being around for their picks.

3.09 T.J. Houshmandzadeh, WR, SEA
(from Lettter_J)

I had originally intended to take a second RB here(even after taking Brady in Rd 2), but I wasn't enamored with any of them once it came to this pick. The only one that stuck out even a little bit was McFadden, but he was just one of 7-8 on the same tier. I decided to hold off and see what was left in the next round.

So, I started looking at WR. I considered a number of different options here, but in the end I went with TJ. After a couple of 'risky' picks, I wanted someone who can be consistent. Not a flashy pick. Probably not going to be a breakout top 5 receiver, but hopefully he'll be solid.

Won't be back until around 7pm eastern tonight. Leaving a queue for rounds 8 and 9 only. I may get my pick in before I leave in a few minutes, but if not, my free form will be open to the guys next to me in the draft. I want top of my list in the 8th round and then top of the remaining IDPs (there's only 2 RBs at the top of my list) for the 9th round. If for some reason all the guys in my queue go before my 9th round pick, I will pick when I get home and apologize for holding the draft up.

Regarding positions: If you draft a player who is listed at a certain position in MFL, you will be allowed to continue to use that player at that position as long as you own him.

If MFL changes a position designation after the draft and allows us to reset it back to the original position, that would be great.

Meanwhile, you can use Cody Brown as a placeholder for the draft now, as he was just put on injured reserve for the season.

We will start with a moratorium on any roster moves once the draft has completed. Hopefully, we can simply put all free agents on waivers and let the system handle that - but will have to check to see if that capability is there.

In any event, please review your team roster and make sure it looks in order. And post your remaining rationales here as soon as possible. I'll work on that later today and tonight.

Very quick draft by historical norms. We averaged about 52 minutes per pick.

Wiggs didn't get a defense like he mentioned.

I'm unable to fix the last pick for wiggs at kafenatid, but it is correct at mfl.com

Guru - can you please refresh my memory on how the post-draft waiver process will work? I need a mulligan on one of my picks.

[326] First, we assign waiver priorities based on the inverse of the draft order.

Then, all undrafted players are subject to a waiver claiming period.

After that, any free agent can be added.

Will have to see whether MFL can handle this automatically. It probably can.

Shoot me an email how you want it set up and I'll take care of it. As of now people have ability to do whatever they want so please make no moves while we sort out how to handle this. I would propose a waiver period after the last preseason game and a free for all Tuesday before the thursday of the first week.
