I think he'll be fine in-season. Its not like there are tons of free agents in this league to play around with. He can set a lineup each weekend, respond to trades and put in his weekly waiver claims and he's good for another week. I feel like post-draft I put less time into this league than any other cause there really isn't anyone to pick up or matchups to play via the FA pool.

Just needs draft help. I know PD offered to assist.

We are looking at using drafttime this season. Judy has offered to do all the legwork and setup for us. This will take a little time to set up. She will get all the invites out so we can sign p. Then once keepers are set up will get those put into the site.

Drafttime will make our draft quicker and may allow us to start later. Last season's draft took a week. Definitely want time before first game starts for changes but there is only one game on that Thursday before the rest of the games on Sunday. Season starts Thurs Sept 8.

Typically we would have keepers on Monday at Noon and draft the next day. This might allow us to have keepers due on Tues Aug 30 and Draft starting Wed Aug 31. That means we'd have that night to get the players put in and your scouting and draft setup complete. Last year there were some issues with the Monday at Noon Keeper deadline and several wanting to make trades but didn't get them done in time. So I would like to give them the day. If we need more time to get keepers and prepare the draft we could have the keeper deadline at Monday at 6pm ET. There is no Monday night game.

Give some input and we can make a final decision. Will look and see if I can find a copy of the schedule program so I can get the schedule up for this season.

I just sent out the drafttime invitation. I think i sent to to all your emails -- not sure just how the message function works in cbs... It, of course, did not come to me since I sent it. There were more than 23 names on the list??

Anyhow, could one person post here that they got the email notice so that I know it went through??

Thanks.

Ah, I see there are co-managers, henc the >23 names. Also, I finally did get the email sign up notice, so forget that request.

If your drafttime sign up name does not resemble your G24 name, please alert me so I know who you are for setting the order. It is tough enough using real NFL team names and keeping managers straight.

Thanks.

2011 Schedule

I retrieved the Schedule program to make our schedule. It will take some time to get it input into CBS. Then will need for everyone to check their schedules to that. It is very easy to make a mistake as every input is a dropdown.

Jseth is managing the Bills. CT has the Browns. They are the ones who should be in drafttime.

Current traded picks:

XIV 2011 Traded Draft Picks:
8-23 Vikings get Chief's 1st rounder ( '10 2nd, WIllis/Palmer)
8-24 Raiders get Browns conditional pick (If Delhomme is a top 20 QB (per CBS rankings) at the end of 2010, Oakland and Cleveland will swap 2011 first round picks. If he is top 21-25 we swap second round picks. 26+ we swap third round picks. This conditional swap is nullified in the case that the Browns finish ahead of the Raiders at the end of the 2010 season.)
10-9 Browns get Packers 7th round for his 8th (Cillins/Batch)
10-23 Chargers and Browns exchange 2011 last round draft picks (Gradkowski)
10-30 Ravens get San Diego 5th for their 8th
11-3 Judy gets YR's 5th round pick + YR gets Judy's 7th round pick (Mare)
11-12 GO's 3rd Round Draft Pick goes to PD's Browns (Jackson/McCoy)
11-16 Chargers gets Jets 6th round pick in 2011 , Jets get Chargers 11th round pick in 2011 (via Browns) (Kitna and '12 picks)
11-16 Ravens get Jets 4th Round Pick for their 11th Round Pick
11-18 Cowboys send Jaguars their 9th round pick in exchange for Jaguars' 11th round pick. (Graham)
12-2 Vikings get Lions 2nd for his 6th. Upgradable to 2nd for 4th if Lions win in week 14 and a 1st for 4th if LIons win Title (Henne/Vilma)
12-3 Saints get 49ers 4th for his 7th (Janikowski D swap)

I will work on the getting the draft grid setup so we can keep up. This is going to be more important than the schedule input into CBS right now.

So what is happening here -- managers chime into these conditional conditions!

According to MFL rankings Delhomme is #48 -- so this is now a Round 3 swap -- correct? Looks like Brownies were last...

12-2 Vikings get Lions 2nd for his 6th. Upgradable to 2nd for 4th if Lions win in week 14 and a 1st for 4th if LIons win Title (Henne/Vilma) Playoff history in not on site -- Anybody know what happened here in week 14?

I looked at the wrong year of G24 draft (Pre IDPs when it only took us a week). Last season it took us 10.5 days to draft. I am not sure if drafttime can cut 4 days off the draft to be able to start a week later. Rethinking the tentative draft times now...

However, that said, Drafttime flies -- IF people use its features properly with Q's and autopicks...

I would have extra picks, IIRC, if I get to a pick and I a full roster I'm automatically skipped.

Hopefully, I'll be able to make some trades and either get more picks in a future year like the Pats or swap multiple picks for a single pick or player.

Judy said there are still five who have still not signed up for drafttime. I had forgotten about Labor Day Weekend. We are going to need to move the draft up to account for that major slow down.

Maybe we shoot for Keepers due by Tue Aug 23rd (Time is flexible) and Draft starting at Noon ET on Thurs Aug 25? This shortens our lead time down considerably. Might be able to go as late as Noon Wed Aug 23rd for Keepers but that would be the absolute latest as it takes time to get stuff set up for the draft. Esp if guys don't get their Keepers in on time. I am talking with Judy and wil get with Cards and take input from the league before making the call asap.

Says the Philadelphia fan... Well I guess Lee has an many championships as Romo.

Romo 3 Pro Bowls in 4 full seasons... Lee 3 All Star games in 9 years, and about 5 other seasons of mediocrity.
Value to the team? Romo is team leader, Lee doesn't even lead his own pitching staff.

I agree Nerf, he's like a hot potato. But I'll put it in Philly sports fan terms... apparently its a Violation to ever say someone like Romo is good. And I'm gonna be in trouble cause I pointed out that Cliff Lee hasn't been dominant his whole career.

They'll also say that Polanco deserved his all star starting spot (he didn't) and Carlos Ruiz is the best catcher on the planet (he's far from it).

oh my,

Never said Polanco deserved to be an all star -- steady, but not spectacular, declining a bit this year with injuries.

Ruiz is a great catcher for handling a pitching staff -- they trust him, and a good defensive catcher -- has to be for all those sliders. He is a late season hitter -- a bit above average in the late season.

I thought he could have been the MVP of the 2008 series, but as a no name player it wasn't gonna happen:

Yr Team G AB R H 2B 3B HR GS RBI BB IBB SO SH SF HBP GIDP AVG OBP SLG
2008 Phillies 5 16 2 6 2 0 1 0 3 4 0 0 0 0 0 0 .375 .500 .688
2009 Phillies 6 18 4 6 2 1 1 0 2 5 1 2 0 0 0 0 .333 .478 .722

Sorry the stat line does not look nice in the final format, but you can figure it out... last 3 columns for sure.

you may not have, but everyone around here thinks he's their big all star 3B guy... and he's not.

and Ruiz is a good catcher, but he's not even he best defensive catcher - thats Yadier Molina. and he doesn't throw people out at a high rate, a hallmark of a great defensive catcher - so yes, he calls a good game. to veteran pitchers that were already really track record before throwing to him, so did he make them much better?

but to say Romo isn't a top player at the QB position is just fan hatred and denial. and I dislike the Cowboys myself.

Ihave gone over all the team drafts picks and they match the list in #89 above.

Okay here is I think an error:

Pick 11.20 does not belong to anyone. CT already has 11 picks by round 10.

Gshade gave up his #1 pick and did not get anything in return so he should be one draft pick short.

So to make it all work I stuck a gshade pick in 11:20 which CT cannot use and we will ask gshade to draft Favre in this slot. Gshade will need to use FA to complete his team.

Does that make sense to everyone?? anyone??? Gshade agreee?

Looks like everyone has selected Keepers and now have checked their keepers except for Twarpy which I did. Doug did have input on arpys keepers too. Thanks!

Now I will be running the script which dumps all non keepers. Make sure they match up. If they differ the one listed in the keeper thread is official. However, once the draft starts it may be too late to fix so then your CBS would take precedence. Clear as mud?

Keepers are processed. All teams have 9 players.

When we draft in drafttime, you will need to pick your player up in CBS as usual. This will also help you figure out which players are left and do your research on CBS.

Cards, Judy and myself are going over the draft parameters. When everything is finalized we will send an email out. Would love to post the final draft in a thread in standings forum too to preserve as historical review.

It is imperative that after a draft pick is made that the corresponding player is picked up in CBS.

When everything is done, we will open up the site untimed until the official start tomorrow at Noon.

The keepers and draft trades are all set in Drafttime. You will get an email from Drafttime that the draft has started. At this point you can manage your Q's and make picks if you wish. Play around with the Q features. They are very nice. Clock will not begin until Thursday at NOON. Many of you have used drafttime for baseball, but here are some important features:

Although there is a provision for a designated picker in Drafttime, it is not needed as there is an "autopick" which you can set for 0 min, or any delay you want (ie., it will wait xx minutes for you to pick and it you do not, it auto picks for you). You can turn your Q's on and off. So you can fill a Q and keep it on or off. If open, the computer will autopick for you so be aware of that. Q's are round specific.

Warning: the draft will go much faster than you might expect so be prepared with your Q's.

After you draft your player, you MUST go to CBS and add him to your team. This keeps the CBS data base up to date.

This Supplemental Draft will be comprised of 11 rounds and the order is in post #89 and (input into Drafttime) through now. As a reminder, you may only select players listed in our CBS database. We ask that there is no mention of undrafted players during the draft please. In the unlikely event there is a player you wish to draft is in CBS and not in drafttime, please contact Judy, Ref and Cards so hopefully one of us can take a look.

There will be a per pick time limit to start the draft of THREE (3) hours and a cumulative draft clock of TWELVE (12) hours. This means that your total time you take to draft each round will continue to accrue. If you hit 12 hrs you will be skipped automatically. If you are skipped due to a pick or cumulative clock, you may still post your selection at any time. If you have not selected your last pick by the time it is your turn to pick again, you will be skipped automatically. The commishs may reduce clocks as needed. Time will not accrue between midnight and 8 am ET, but picks may still be made during this time. This draft will move faster than we are used to with all the Qs. Commishs will have to manually skip a manager who is skipped twice. Please contact all three of us!!! There will likely not be a chart posted but we will keep track of the "suspect" managers. Please understand that this is not a personal penalty, but simply a way to start as late as possible and still get this deep draft complete in a timely manner so three of four people can't hold up the draft for everyone. Since we went to this system several years ago, our drafts have been very quick and rarely does someone time out of their c clock. Per pick timed-outs also are infrequent.

Trades: If a trade has been made, a commish must approve it and put it into drafttime. You may draft for each other if it is a timliness issue and you are certain the trade will go through.
Please note that CT has an extra draft pick and gshade is short a drft pick. 11.20 belongs to CT up until the time that the pick comes up. However, we've had to put gshade in there to satisfy drafttime. If that pick is not used, gshade may not keep that pick.

With that said, Frick's Vikings have the first pick and may pick as soon as the draft is started!!!

Thanks and good luck.

With clock stopped from 12 to 8 am EDT I can be time stopped out before 8:01 am PDT. I am really getting damned tired of the east coast bias in all these clock stoppages- Be reasonable on the west coast we don't need a clock stoppage at 9 pm. Furthermore it really isn't fair that our stoppage ends before 8 am much less at 5am. If I get time stopped because of these silly bioased rules I certainly will not be exceedingly irate.

Valkyrie

The clock is stopped, but you can still pick and work on your Q's as the draft is still open. It just means that a pick is not required.

You can use Q's with the autopick to manage stuff for your next round.

But I hear you...would 1 am make a big difference -- maybe we need to ask folks...

I'm sure there are a lot of east coasters that would prefer a downtime of 9-5 instead of 12-8. It's never going to be perfect and I agree 5 AM sucks for most people. However it works both ways since I'm guessing most east coasters aren't typically up past 11 PM. With the advanced queue system it's pretty easy to set a queue and you should be golden.

132: I will check yet again. I it showing as able. I might have been able to as a commish.

East Coast Biased: Agreed. this has been something we have discussed for a long time. We polled the league two or three straight years and the west coasters at that time said it was fine as it is. I am not a west coaster and I don't like it either--esp. with a 3 hr clock. But you can pick when you CAN pick at any time--the only thing that stops is the clock. I am not sure how late we can take it though. 9 am is till 6 am. If we go a later night time then we are talking about the clock running after midnight for ET. I am definitely open to changing it. If we get behind we may have to cut per pick down to 2 hrs later in the draft, but I think we are fine. If someone wants to expand the draft pause, speak up now with proposals.

The fact is you east coasters don't run everything everywhere and it's time you recognized that ! Maybe we should go to Greenwich time and screw everyone equally.

Seriously though, w/o making a change to that clock, fixing a skipped pick may not be 100% possible--hence the call for a change today. Fortunately the Qs help us but hard to set far in advance--for me anyhow.

I would like Greenwich time. it would still be 1 or 2 hours off for me, but better than 6 (ET) or 9 (PT).

the problem I have with all the timezones is that you don't know which web site is operating in which time zone, especially with all the different timezones in the US. some of the sites allow me to set my timezone, some of them don't and some of them switch between GMT, ET and PT and I have no idea which timezone is displayed. She should begin to hit Philly/NJ area Sat night and stick around for about 24 hours. Do we have contingencies if folks do not have power? It doesn't seem fair to mess up a draft due to mother nature... I know we can set Q's but how far in advance will they last?

For the draft, we need to use the Q system. In drafttime, you can load up a Q, but keep it unavailable, turning it on after you are sure that's what you want to do.
You need then to set it to autopick and you can put a delay in there, so when you get the email that it is your turn to pick you can use that timed delay to make sure it is what you want -- if you need to do that.

You need to set up your email alert system. You can have drafttime notify you right before your pick or even sooner -- mine is set for 3 picks out.

As I look over the home page, I see the Q's from picks 1.15 to 1.24 empty except for two managers who have Q's filled and autopick on. Every other Q is empty.

I urge you to use the Q system or we'll still be picking when the first game goes off on Sept 8th!

Fred put in most of our suggestions to make drafttime better, but it is up to us to use those features.

FYI

If you click on a manager's name, you get to see his/her players. You also get to see your total clock time. Note that we will need to adjust it for those who picked before we turned the clock on... The clock was turned on at 2:17 for those of you who like math. When you click on the player list, you get to see who has not been taken yet. YOu can sort each of those columns alphabetically.

The problem is you have to make the list to begin with. May be helpful for multiple drafts, but not much help otherwise. Not having any kind of scouting tools or sorting tools or import tools really limits the usefulness of that site for drafting. Has some nice features, but becomes very time consuming to set up and requires ranking done somewhere else, then finding the player by name and entering them.

I was hopeful that the import function would allow import of some default pre-ranked list that could then be modified.

I talked with Fred about the pre-rank and he expects by baseball draft time he'll have this adjusted with a default type ranking to import for everyone to manipulate. He's been playing around with how to implement it, but doesn't expect he'll have it ready by this fall in time for hoops, hockey etc.

Like is mentioned above, it wasn't a huge deal for me cause i qued up like 200 players one time and then used across multiple drafts.

Would people remember to pickup their players on CBS? It's useless to research if you're having to go back and forth as the players are on CBS and already picked in Draftime.

I know an autopick is different, but if you could at least pick them up somethime.

And after that, I'm gone for about 3 hrs and have left the next 2 rounds on auto w/o delay and available to pickers so I take that to mean anyone can draft the player, but if one of the commish's would add my player if it gets to me, I'd be grateful as always, ds

I think he has to retain DL eligeabilty or it defeats the whole purpose of us using draft software if he does not. I request a ruling from the Commish. thank you.

Its whatever CBS has him as. Thats what matters.

Kafenatid can have him as anything they want, they could have him at QB if they wanted... cause there might be some league out there with different eligibility rules that lets you play him at that position that is not CBS. But where CBS has him eligible is all that matters to us.

The best I can tell is that Mario Williams was moved to OLB for this season. I'm sorry you didn't realize that he didn't have DL eligibilty, but once a pick is made, you have to wait for waivers to run to get somebody else. I can't think of an instance where we let somebody change their pick unless it was a duplicate pick, but that shouldn't happen using draftime.

You are missing the point. Its not Kafenatid's fault, its your responsibility to check your league website's eligibility requirements.

How does kafenatid know if you are using ESPN, Yahoo, CBS or GO's Fantasypalooza (coming soon)?
ESPN - Mario is DL eligible actually. So how does the draft utility know that you aren't using ESPN?

fine- I see your points- Tell me again why are we using Kafenetid when it is inaccurate and misleading? Actually it doesn't really matter- It is a good lesson to be learned during rebuilding rather than sometime in the future when my team will be fighting for a playoff berth.

Actually St Lo- I did know that Mario Williams was being used at OLB in 3-4 sets this year- I also know he was a DE in 4-3 all last year. What I did not know was that our draft sight had meaningless and misleading position designations.

I agree it is misleading, because when you type the players name in it does have a position listed next to them in draftime. I guess the lesson is to always check the eligibility in the league you are drafting for.

The reason we are using draftime is to take some of the burden off the commishes who otherwise had to monitor the draft the entire week looking for duplicate picks, expired clocks, emailing who was up, etc. Would be nice if we could use the cbs draft tool but ref checked and it was missing some features.

Let's see why is it misleading- Oh because our draft site that we are using lists him as a DL yet the gamesite which we are supposed to manually transfer our picks denies him the drafted status- Duh- Is it unreasonable to expect that when you draft a player at DL- he is actually a DL ? Obviously it is unreasonable in our league.
Like I said screw it- it's not like it is going to cost me a playoff spot-it's just ridiculous to have to pay for a misleading site where DLs aren't really DLs.

His default suggested position is DL because it's what ESPN/Yahoo categorize him as. It's up to you to change it to accurately reflect what your host site CBS chooses to do. And for whatever reason they choose to only consider him an LB. When you make the pick you can change the position right next to his name to mirror CBS's choice.

In the future, I suggest you make the pick on CBS first to be sure, and then go over to Kafenatid and match what you just did on CBS.

I would also click into Williams name now on kafenatid and switch him to LB so he's current.

Is there a setting in draftime that would allow the commish to click a setting that would then match positions up with whatever league was being used?

It's easy enough to click a player's position to match after you draft him, however, before you draft him, when you click on a players name, it also shows a position. Would be extrememly helpful if that position was the same as the default used in draftime, so if that were configurable it would be a big help.

Not my system sir, I just have common sense to check my host website to see where its gonna let me play a given player before picking them. Cause I know ESPN, Yahoo, CBS all categorize them differently. If I played on some website that only let me play Vick at RB, I wouldn't get pissed at some draft proxy for suggesting he is a QB. Who thinks that Mario should still be DL eligible? Kafenatid, Yahoo, Valkaryie, ESPN, GO... who doesn't? CBS. So take it up with them.

Cards, I wonder if they couldn't code it to feed in a player database from the various websites somehow with hosting site specific position designation.

Again, I have a lot of rl issues going on and I am unable to spend the time on here I used to spend. Am just seeing this issue.

CBS site takes precedence over everything. Draftime wasn't even trusted to have all players available in CBS (as mentioned in 111) and there is nothing a commish can do to change a player's eligibility. It is solely controlled by CBS. CBS HAS made changes in the past but they will not make a player multi-positional in football. You can send CBS a msg asking them to change.

I do all my research before selecting a player on CBS. Making sure he is still available, etc. It is perfectly understandable that a recent auto-pick was still in CBS db, but picks made several rounds previously is frustrating. For that reason, I am going to try and make CBS' draft site work for us in the future. This will put players on their team automatically.

I think the draft went very well. Much better and faster than posting in here and the Qs are huge. I still need to make the time to get the schedules input and will also get the draft picks put in the standings forum for historical reference.

Tree put this in the Poli thread a few days ago, showed how productive we were over here vs. a board only draft they are doing.

the G24 did 214 picks - 9 rounds, 24 teams - in just over 4 days - an average of about 50 picks a day.
RIFC did 336 picks - 24 rounds, 14 teams - in 8 days - an average of about 42 picks a day.
we've (Poli) done 120 picks and aren't done yet. it's taken us 9 days so far. that's about 13 picks a day.

The waiver order has to be set first. I never can remember if we set it before or after we turn on waivers. I seem to remember that we start waivers and then set the order, but I'm sure ref knows.

Waivers are turned on and season is underway. I was able to move up the Waivers default until ~ 2 am ET Wednesday morning as the earliest. This means you have until then to make a claim. After waivers run, all players who were not just dropped will be Free Agents. Dropped players need 1 full day plus the remainder of that day to clear waivers. So if you drop a player at any time on a Thursday, he will be available to come off waivers early Saturday morning. You must claim him before then or he will be a FA and can be picked up first come, first serve.

This week the Packers and Saints play on Thursday. The players on these teams will lock 5 mins before game time. You may not make any transactions with these players this week after their lock. However, all other players are fair game until the normal 5 mins before kickoff of the first game on Sunday.

All trades must be approved by a commish. If a commish thinks a trade is questionable that commish will consult another commish. Your trade that is agreed to close to the weeks' deadline may still be approved, but please give us time as we may not see it in time to approve it. Also if it is questionable, it could be delayed. This can be critical when guys are covering bye weeks. Please plan ahead so our last minute unavailablility doesn't affect your plans.

When you make a trade in CBS please make sure any draft pick trades are clearly defined in that offer. If that is not what you agreed to, decline it and offer it back the other way. Don't simply reply to the offer what you think it should be and accept it. Sometimes email communication can be misunderstood. Also make sure a commish properly lists any traded draft picks properly in the rules.

Thanks and have a great season!

I need to tweak my roster. I have extra starting WRs I can move. Looking for a RB, but also could consider another position who could make an impact.

Adjustments for negative yards have been entered (remember CBS does not compute negative gains and we have to do that manually. As always, let me know if I missed any).

Under our scoring system it differentiates scoring for offensive categories, defensive categories, and special scoring for DL, LB, and DB.

Only IDPs are eligible for defensive scoring, but it does not specify one way or the other as to what players are eligible for scoring in offensive categories.

I thought I had made a decent move by picking up Dave Rayner to fill in my bye week Kicker issue, as it was a fairly late announcement that Janikowski wasn't going to play. I still think that my team isn't that great this year. and this while sitting at the top of a division with the 4th most points for and the 4th most points against. it will be tough fighting for the division because 2nd place might not be enough to reach the playoffs.

I have big matchup this week against the Eagles who destroy the competition until now. I mean the G24 Eagles not the Philadelphia Eagles. they look better on paper than on the field.

Always amazes me how close things get in this league. A 0.26 pt loss to Pete and a game lost after a cbs adjustment on a Tuesday is the difference between being 11-9 and in a great spot for a wild card and 9-11 and having to hope for miraculous things just to make it in.

Every year there are teams who's playoff fates are decided by a game won or lost by a point or two during the regular season or by the playoff tie breaker.

Would love to follow RIFC and ditch The DST for 2012. With 24 teams there are not enough DST to go around to make it truly competitive. Plus with the high powered offenses, it often ends up in single digits or negatives... Possibly the only position to do so regularly.

Anyone else onboard?

Judy - not a fan of losing the DST. I have the Ravens defense and this would seriously damage my team. this would only work if you know this at least 1 season in advance and/or only if you get some compensation. I would have the same opinion if my defense would be a crappy one not worth keeping.

on the other front: it looks like I may not reach the playoffs. thanks for playing a team that scores 150+ pts. again and again and again! every time a team scored that much it was me or an opponent of mine.
most likely I will have the 3rd highest points scored and the 2nd highest points against of the league. have we ever thought of making the 2nd wild card based on points rather than record?

I don't think it is fair to scrap team D's completely although mine suck but i do think you should be able to not play a team defense. After all there is no penalty for playing with only 10 men if your 11th is worse than nothing.
Judy I'll take the Giants D off your hands just because I still root for them at least in the first half of the year. Do you want either Denver or Miami D?

"have we ever thought of making the 2nd wild card based on points rather than record?"

yes, we've thought about it and rejected it. Why penalize a team that has more wins? Sometimes that is the luck of the draw. Can't imagine that going over in the nfl and don't see why we should be any different.

I will have the 2nd most pts in the NFC north/south but don't see how it would be fair for my team at 11 or 12 wins to get in ahead of a team with 15 or 16 wins.

"Would love to follow RIFC and ditch The DST for 2012. With 24 teams there are not enough DST to go around to make it truly competitive. Plus with the high powered offenses, it often ends up in single digits or negatives... Possibly the only position to do so regularly."

It's supposed to be all about choices. If DST is an integral part of your team plan then draft or trade for one. Of the top 24 DSTs, the best is the 49ers with a 16.0 average while the 24th is Browns at 6.8 so about a 10 pt differential. If you look at QBs by ave per game, the best is Rodgers at 27.1 and the 24th is Moore at 12.3 about a 15 pt differential. So you could make the same argument about QBs. A lot of teams don't have enough RBs or WRs either. That's what this league was supposed to be about and why it was so deep in the first place.

If the league wants though, any rule can be changed.

BTW, the number 1 rated DST for this year was picked with the 20th pick in this years draft and was the 3rd DST picked, so 19 teams passed on this year's number 1 DST.

most points/ most wins - wild card idea... to me its irrelevant that it wouldn't be used in the real NFL, cause this isn't the real NFL and we aren't really on the same field losing a game to somebody else with "real" points.

I think a wild card to highest scoring team is a really good idea. Cause that's all we can really control. And if we did that better than anybody all year, that should be worth something.

Sounds good. We'll implement it starting now and then I'm in the playoffs!

Might as well forget about trying to have a strength of schedule as well. Why not forget about h2h altogether and just go simply straight pts if that is all we can control anyway. But that is just my opinion.

If we must have a DST on the roster then I would like the option to "sit" it. Zero is better than the minus 3 I had on Sunday. That would be a decision I would make to make my team better on any given day -- a coaching decision so to speak. It's tough to be competitive when your DST is gonna cost you each week. The Jints max was 16.2 vs STL (the real STL team not the G24 one) and the worst was minus 10.5 vs NOLA.

It would have been nice to be able to sit them for the NOLA game.

With all the high powered offenses/QB's especially, should we look to change the stat formula to reflect the high scoring that has become the norm for most real NFL offenses.

You say the #1 DST was picked #20, but that is still the first round for a DST! (And it was mjd's second DST.)I "keep" a DST not because I like them (I don't and should have taken the trade offer in August...) for safety since I don't want to "waste" an early rounder on one. Again, my choice. But if I wait too long (and how long is too long???), there might not be ANY DST left to pick. With 24 picks in between, you could lose out and then be held hostage by someone with two who wants a nice draft pick in return.

There are always tons of other position players to choose, although they might not start on a regular basis. And with all the injuries...

more on DST (lotsa free time today -- sorry)

20 managers kept a DST. The four who did not keep got them at 1.15, 1.16, 3.07 and 4.06.

The other picks -- all second DST -- were: 1.20, 2.03, 2.12, 3.04, 3.21, 3.22, 4.07, 5.05.

The guy with the gutsy move was Valkryie who waited until 4.06 for his first DST and there were only two left!

The pairings are (keeper/draft):
Carolina / 49ers (1.20)
Dallas / TB (2.03)
Rams / Colts (2.12)
Miami / Houston (3.04)
AZ / Seattle (3.21)
Balt / Bills (3.22)
NEP / Jax (5.05)

and draft / draft:
Cinn (3.07) / Wash (4/07)

Strategy question: I'd be curious to know from the double up managers if the second DST was used only for a bye week and/or for a trade upgrade? Or did you truly agonize over which one to start each week?

All the DST are currently on rosters... none have been dropped. Wonder why?

I just thought of this -- DST is the only position "player" that never goes on IR or is OUT for a game... hmmm.
You are stuck with it week in and week out...

I had Miami. I tried to find the DST that matched up the best with Miami's bad weeks,i.e. vs. New England, bye week. Plus I thought Houston would be improved. Later, it looked like I would start Houston every week, so I cut Miami. Plus I needed the roster space. Now Miami is good.

I took the Bills defense for 2 reasons: to have a backup in week 5 and to trade them away afterwards for a pick upgrade. there is no way I bench the Ravens even against the best offense, so I see no reason to play matchups. their lowest scores were -1 (TEN) and +1 (SEA) and these matchups looked much better on paper.

still rooting for Daryl Smith to score 6pts more than Antonio Gates.

I'm not positive, but I'm thinking if I hadn't traded for Wallace and had held onto to Palmer (so the Bears wouldn't have him) that I might have actually made the playoffs. Knew there was that possibility at the time, but it was such a long shot at the time.

"You say the #1 DST was picked #20, but that is still the first round for a DST! "

What's wrong with taking a DST in the first round of a supplemental draft where 216 players are already off the board as keepers? SF DST has scored 192.5 pts which is equivalent to the 8th highest ranked QB Matt Ryan this year. And like you said, they can't get hurt and go to IR.

There seem to be 3 elite DSTs this year in the 49ers, Ravens, and the Texans. Some of their success is likely related to schedule as well.

You chose to take Ponder over the 49ers. Valid strategy, but the 49ers were there had you wanted them. Of the 8 DST pairs listed, 5 of them are no longer together so the likely strategy was to cover bye weeks. I traded for a bye week D and have held on to them as the Lions had a difficult schedule compared to the Rams. I have the Lions offered for a 3rd round pick in the supplemental draft. Seems fair to me. The year I won the league I traded my 2nd for a DST upgrade during the season.

As far as benching the DST, I don't see it happening logistically. IMO there would still have to be a requirement to own a DST, or else that team would have to have an open roster spot. Otherwise we might as well drop the requirement to have a K, QB or any position really. Benching a DST in any given week might be a valid strategy, but not having a DST at all would not.

Not having a DST would trigger an invalid roster and 0 pts scored and would require manual intervention each week someone chose to do that. I'm not going to monitor and adjust the scores but if the league votes for it and someone else wants to do it then that is fine with me. The alternative would be to allow any lineup to be valid, but that would cause the potential for a lot more problems.

Maybe we could have a requirement where a team could only own 1 DST that wasn't on a bye week? So I could still trade and cover my bye week, but once both DSTs I owned had games in a week I would have to drop one or the other.

Playoff berths being decided by points is bad, by record good. Mirrors the basic football principle that the ball takes funny bounces, especially if you play with an oblate spheroid.

Likewise as the owner of what I believe is the worst DST in captivity, I recognize that a manager should have to start one.

Perhaps the eventual solution to the possibility of a team finding itself without a DST after the draft is this rule:

Whenever the number of DSTs left in the draft is exactly equal to the number of teams without one, no team already with a DST may draft one of the remaining DSTs, and each team without a DST must draft one with its next pick.

On DST's:

Last year I was able to draft a second and used it only on my BYE. After that, I dropped them. This year I missed out on getting a second, but the Bears Bye was long enough out that I thought I could snag a replacement after someone had dropped one. Sure enough, I got the Jags for that week and they turned out to be decent enough that I traded them for a WR and a draft pick upgrade. Pretty good deal!

I would think it would be pretty easy for someone not paying attention to come out of a draft without a DST. Then what happens?

I wasn't paying attention to bye weeks and ended up drafting Seattle who had the same bye week. I ended up passing on the only trade offer which would have netted me negative points. I just as soon take a zero for D/ST than trade draft picks in the 2-3 round for next years draft. I play in 5 leagues and this is the only one that still uses a D/ST.

Cards - one question - If I came in 1st place, why am I playing the 7th place team? I remember losing to the #8 team last year in the 1st round (Dallas).

I have been largely out of pocket for awhile and am just seeing the league today for the first time. Looks like they finally put some time into their structure which was so user-UNfriendly. Looks like they may have helped with commish tools as well. I'm going to look at running the draft on CBS as well.

StL Cards, our treasurer and original member has said that he will be unable to play anymore. He will go through and send all monies on file to Judy. This is a huge loss to our league and me, personally as he helped me in so many ways. This league takes a lot of time to run. Scheduling alone is no fun at all. If we can figure out the draft on CBS, that would be a huge step for us.

I'd be willing to get rid of Matt Ryan for the right offer.

For whatever reason, I don't like the guy.

Sheesh Slizz,

He's a nice kid. Played QB at the school where I taught. Never had him in class though, but a class kid.

Re football skills, I do agree that the jury is out...

Ref you at least need to play even if we need to split the load up and take some stuff off your plate. Maybe we can cut down on some of the historical record keeping?

Whats the most time consuming in the pre-season? Making the schedule? I think we should be able to assist with that.

But even if you can't commish anymore, I think we all would want you to at least participate in running a team... maybe less work will rejuvenate your interest and enjoyment instead of it feeling like a job.

Wholly Hannah! I am very sad to hear Kirk has stopped playing, but he's mentioned it before in the past. Your presence & personality will be missed most buddy.

But Ref? I've known you've said you've were busy last year, but you're synonymous with G24 (and G20 Baseball & Football). I've never imagined you not playing!

Maybe use something like Draftime to run the draft? The issues with that is keepers being taken out of the database and drafted to each team, but that something we control if we start earlier!

Ref, I think you should play, on the assumption that your desire to play will most likely come back. You said you're not sure; don't drop unless and until you are sure.

It looks like we need to help here. Time is going to get short soon.

I should be able to run the draft through draft time.

Happy to help out in managing or co-managing a team, if you guys are really stuck. I'll be managing a team in RIFC AAA and in Mario LeMoose's non-keeper When Pigs Fly league and that's it.

364: Yeah DS, but there is a lot of stuff going on.

1. My RL is so busy right now. Good things are happening and at times I just won't be available.
2. This game takes a lot of time to run--esp. during setup but also you have to be timely like approving trades in time for the freeze and being able to put in waiver claims and pickups etc.
3. My integrity has been called into question and I don't think anyone should commish a league when that has happened.
4. Apparently I am a slick, underhanded, snake-oil salesman that screws people over--using the commish pulpit to do it--when it comes to trading and it hurts the league. Oh yeah, don't forget I have to approve all trades.
5. I am not listened to. As a commish if you can't lay out and communicate effectively so that everyone understands how things work, you shouldn't commish. Even the new comish in baseball STILL has no concept of how their new rules are going to work and others do not as well. Now it makes sense why so many were quick to poo-poo my issues. You need to have someone who is better in that respect. Don't have to agree with me, but have to have a complete understanding what is going on.
6. TIME. Why would I take so much time away from family and rl when all I am going to catch is flack? Frankly, I don't want or need the drama and to make the time to do all this stuff and then subject myself and others to the kind of garbage some of us have been through certainly isn't time well spent.

These leagues were set up with the concept of HIGH activity. EVERYONE has motivation to make changes and trades for the current or FUTURE seasons. The rules are applied fairly to all members--not jsut the squeaky wheels. People who make trades have often deeply researched their deals, yet the teams who trade for the future are often attacked personally w/o much research at all if they aren't an equal trade using today's numbers. Discussion is fine. But the attacks make people not want to be active or even play at all.

I have communicated with several people about this and I will help get things set up so everyone isn't screwed over because they don't know how to do it, but frankly the enjoyment of these leagues for me has been all but zapped.
