Subject: RIHC 2008-09: Draft Discussion

  Posted by: Guru - [330592710] Tue, Oct 14, 2008, 17:47

I will activate the draft momentarily. The clock will not start until Wednesday morning, and any picks tonight are strictly optional. You can, however, begin to set up a queue if you expect timing conflicts tomorrow.

We will proceed with a 6 hour clock. The draft clock will continue through weekends. There will be a clock moratorium each night from 1am until 7am Eastern time. Picks can continue to be made during the moratorium period, but the clock will be paused. Those picking at the endpoints do not get a double clock. In addition, if anyone is already in arrears for a pick when their next pick is due, they do not necessarily get a second clock period. This will be subject to Commissioner discretion.

The draft is configured for only PG, SG, SF, PF, and C. Many players will be eligible for multiple positions; just choose the position designation that seems most appropriate. This is only for the purposes of displaying the draft results, and has no bearing on your eventual usage options.

Our roster configuration will be as follows:
PG, SG, G, G
PF, SF, F, F
C, C
Util, Util
3 bench
2 DL

Yahoo position eligibility will be used throughout the season. You are advised to check the Yahoo league site prior to selecting any player to ensure that you know that player's position eligibility at the start of the season.

You do not need to draft a completely valid roster.

Following the draft, all undrafted players will be placed on waivers, and waiver priorities will start out in inverse draft order.

You may draft a player who is not currently listed at Yahoo. If you do so, you will be assigned a placeholder player at Yahoo until the drafted player is made available, at which time you must pick up that player as a free agent (without using a waiver priority). After the 15 rounds of the draft are completed, you can no longer claim an unlisted player.

This league will have a limit of 84 games per position. Since there are 2 slots for each of G, F, C, and U, those position slots will be subject to a combined limit of 168 games.

Here are my ground rules for selecting from a queue: If you have a queue and make it available, and it is your turn to pick, I will make your pick if I'm around - unless you have provided specific instructions via email or in this thread. Therefore, do not make (or leave) your queue available if you do not want it used.

You can specify that only the top name on your queue is to be displayed, or that the entire queue is to be shown. If you make the entire queue visible, I'll certainly check for any emails that might provide additional instructions. You can also authorize a DP to make a selection "free-form" (i.e., typing in the name, rather than selecting from a preset list.) Presumably, you would elect this only if you provide specific instructions to your DP(s).

Regardless, be aware that your queue is not visible to me or to any other designated picker until it is your turn to pick.

Please refrain from mentioning any undrafted player in this thread. You can use this thread to alert others about your availability, to request volunteers to accept a queue, to raise questions about draft rules or mechanics, to solicit trade offers or announce trades, etc.

Based on recent drafts, it is reasonable to expect that we will complete approximately 24 picks (2 full rounds) per day. Do not assume that you'll have a day off.

After two rounds have been completed, I will start a separate thread for draft rationales. We will then try to keep the rationale thread on a 2 round delay.

For clarification, if you draft a player who is injured, you may place him in one of your DL slots at the beginning of the season. However, once the draft is over, you may not pick up an injured player and immediately place him on the DL.

Complete injury rules appear post [1] of the preseason thread.

Here are the links for anyone who wants to follow any of the RIHC drafts. Picks are first listed sequentially, with a draft grid by position displayed at the bottom of the page:

RIHC

AAA #1

AAA #2

AA #1

There may be a second AA league, but it has not yet completely formed.

If i'd been left with Kobe instead of Amare, i would have been trying to trade down with you to get Wade, KnicksFan. I nearly did that anyway, but i couldn't pass on locking up a C position with my 1st pick.

I guess that makes us both geniuses, or both equally as dumb :)

There's no question that tanking a category can work. I won two years ago by intentionally tanking in blocks.

It does require good execution to maximize the rest of the categories, and it also helps alot if the league is competitive, so that no team is able to run away with a title.

LOL. Not only did he come off, he cost a couple later round downgrades :-) What really amazes me is that Tree stole him in the 6th round in AAA last year. I thought he was still a 'sleeper' and wasn't looking at him until 7th or 8th. He feels a little high here, but let's just say I'm happy at least one Pacer is 2nd round worthy.

Go to the draft home page of our draft - the one that shows the active spot for whomever's up. Then click on your name. Then click on the player you want to change. Then set his position.

Well, some good news for team Species relative to our fellow Kafenatid drafters:

In 6 of my first 7 picks (Howard, Marion, Kidd, Kev Martin, A. Miller, Barbosa) I have chosen my player with the latest pick of all other drafts. The only exception was Dalembert, who was a "need" pick, and with 20 picks until my next pick, I knew that I would have to take the shotblocking C I needed if I wanted him, even if "value" dictated someone else.

Since my biggest strength in drafts typically is spotting good value, I guess I can't complain too much after having my 5th and 7th round picks snatched 1 spot ahead of me.

Since Joe Johnson and Artest have dual position eligibility, I just figured out that I actually took a PG and a PF rounds 3 and 4, so now I feel much better about my draft. The draft grid looks better too. ;-)

Swish, I'd say Gilbert is good value here. You're right we're all too scared - but the upside on him coming back and being at least serviceable for half a season and maybe much, much better is probably much more likely to impact your season than the potential impact of losing your tenth round pick to injury all year. If I'd realized my team was so balanced after all, I might have taken him myself.

However, I pick immediately after him - so while I am deciding on mine, I will let his pick sit there in case he comes back and wants to give it a final once over and make that or a different selection. Once I'm ready to go I'll use his queue if he has not already done it. I'll have a pick within an hour or two max.

LOL....and to think when I was considering my 5th round pick and plugged Jamal Crawford (86% FT) into my spreadsheet I nearly convinced myself not to tank it.

Before I took Shaq, if I eliminated "The Howard Effect" from my FT%, it increased from like 74% to 80% just be getting rid of him!

But, there's no sense fooling yourself, and if that means that FT-brickers fall to me and offer me excellent everything-but-FT value, I'll be happy to attempt to capitalize.

Anyone need Kevin Martin and his 10 FT attempts per game at 85%??

45.05 Art Glover, F, SAS

It's hard to find good players in round 45, but Art Glover is one of them. I expect him to attend between 50-55 games this season, and he should be able to make a few buckets during halftime promotions. Also considered Jelani McCoy.

Guru,
I was up the better part of the night agonizing over whether Monta Ellis was going to come back strong this season or not. This round the talent seemed to drop off to where it was the time to take the gamble. Ultimately I decided at 11.02 that I had taken enough injury gambles with my previous picks that I didn't want to push my luck here. I felt I found someone that I felt still had some upside and would be playing from day 1. Somehow I suspected Monta would not make it back to me at 12.11 and sure enough, he didn't.

I'm guessing PR is pretty sure that he wants the guy in his queue (due to mention of trading up). Holt, you around? If so, I can select from PR's queue.........if not, no real need to.

#228 Believe it or not, I still got my man in the 12th. Your pick of Haslem here was probably pretty good, with the latest press out of Miami.

I just hope Florian doesn't nab a super pick, but since he seems to see someone standing out, I'll probably be like "doh!" after I see who he takes.

I have to leave in a few minutes, and will not return until after 9:30. I'm going to go ahead and process the trade without confirmation from Florian, just to try to get this thing moving again.

Mike D has set up a queue - I just hope someone other than me is a DP, or it will have to wait.

Might as well stay aggressive. If Stephon doesn't pan out here in the 13th, I'll feel much less silly than I did two years ago when I took him in the third.

I was looking at Nate earlier, Florian, when D'Antoni was raving about his athleticism. But the latest noise with Crawford going to the bench and Robinson and Marbury both starting was just too much. I'd love to see little Nate thrive. He's fun to watch. I really doubt Stephon ends up with starter's minutes but on the off chance he does, he's a decent consolation prize to Nate.

I can't imagine a three guard line-up with Marbury, Duhon and Robinson working at all. I think it's much more likely to be Marbury (or Crawford) and Duhon with Robinson coming off the bench much like Barbosa did in Phoenix for D'Antoni. If Robinson can approach what Barbosa did in Phoenix I'll be thrilled.

LOL. I saw his name on there, and I was more surprised than anything. I definitely don't consider him a Pacer at this point, though technically he is. When your locker has been cleaned out and your belongings sent to you, and you've been told to stay away, that pretty much parallels how I feel about him as a Pacer. Not even sure I want to acknowledge the 'ex-pacer' label at this point. Too bad really. So much potential in his game. So much potential in his life, squandered on the streets.

The draft is complete, and all picks have been entered at the Yahoo site. If you have not done so, please review for accuracy. Later this afternoon, I will activate the league, and all undrafted players will be on waivers for 2 days.

If you have a draftee who is eligible for an injury slot, you may add a player to your roster from free agency after waivers have cleared. You may also submit a waiver claim to add an injury-replacement player, but this will count as a regular waiver claim (and therefore move your priority to the back.)

Initial waiver priorities will be the reverse of the round 1 draft order.

Please post your remaining rationales ASAP.

I will start a draft recap thread for your comments. You are not, however, required to post comments in that thread.

I will also publish a consolidated listing of picks from all five RIHC leagues. However, I will defer on that until all league drafts have been completed. (The AA#2 league is just about finished with round 12.)

The league has been activated. All undrafted players have a waiver date of Oct. 27. I believe waivers will be processed early that morning, and free agents can then be added on Monday in time to be activated for Tuesday's opening games.

12.12 Kevin Love C MIN

I wasn't planning to take so many unproven players in a row but Love had dropped way beyond his adp (according to all the mocks, rihc's, cheat sheets, etc.). He'll probably come off the bench to start the season but he should still get his fair share of minutes. He projects to be a good offensive big guy (3's and points) who can help with rebounds. hopefully I won't have to cut him due to lack of playing time. hell, it's the 144th pick of the draft. low risk, possibly high reward.

13.01 Ramon Sessions PG MIL

took him purely bade on those ridiculous games he had at the end of last season. what was he getting, 15 assiste per game? anyway, I might have to cut him due to lack of playing time. at the time that I drafted him none of that was fully clear. I took a long hard look at Grant Hill here. Not sure why I didn't take him now. Maybe I should have.

14.12 Hakim Warrick SF MEM

With more starter minutes projected, I'm hoping this is a breakthrough season for Warrick. His FG% is over 50, he's capable of putting up 20 ppg, and can help a little in all the counting stats (including 3's) other than assists.

15.01 Jerryd Bayless PG POR

I had a hard time finding anyone I wanted to draft here. At the time I drafted Bayless it was looking like he could receive decent playing time, but recent news reports make that seem improbable (at least early on). I'll probably cut him so no need to say any more.
