Subject: RIHC 2009-10: Draft discussion

  Posted by: Guru - [330592710] Wed, Oct 14, 2009, 18:03

I will activate the draft momentarily. The clock will not start until Thursday morning, and any picks today are strictly optional. You can, however, begin to set up a queue if you expect timing conflicts tomorrow.

We will proceed with a 6 hour clock. The draft clock will continue through weekends. There will be a clock moratorium each night from 1am until 7am Eastern time. Picks can continue to be made during the moratorium period, but the clock will be paused. Those picking at the endpoints do not get a double clock. In addition, if anyone is already in arrears for a pick when their next pick is due, they do not necessarily get a second clock period. This will be subject to Commissioner discretion.

The draft is configured for only PG, SG, SF, PF, and C. Many players will be eligible for multiple positions; just choose the position designation that seems most appropriate. This is only for the purposes of displaying the draft results, and has no bearing on your eventual usage options.

Our roster configuration will be as follows:
PG, SG, G, G
PF, SF, F, F
C, C
Util, Util
3 bench
2 DL

Yahoo position eligibility will be used throughout the season. You are advised to check the Yahoo league site prior to selecting any player to ensure that you know that player's position eligibility at the start of the season.

You do not need to draft a completely valid roster.

Following the draft, all undrafted players will be placed on waivers, and waiver priorities will start out in inverse draft order.

You may draft a player who is not currently listed at Yahoo. If you do so, you will be assigned a placeholder player at Yahoo until the drafted player is made available, at which time you must pick up that player as a free agent (without using a waiver priority). After the 15 rounds of the draft are completed, you can no longer claim an unlisted player.

This league will have a limit of 84 games per position. Since there are 2 slots for each of G, F, C, and U, those position slots will be subject to a combined limit of 168 games.

Here are my ground rules for selecting from a queue: If you have a queue and make it available, and it is your turn to pick, I will make your pick if I'm around - unless you have provided specific instructions via email or in this thread. Therefore, do not make (or leave) your queue available if you do not want it used.

You can specify that only the top name on your queue is to be displayed, or that the entire queue is to be shown. If you make the entire queue visible, I'll certainly check for any emails that might provide additional instructions. You can also authorize a DP to make a selection "free-form" (i.e., typing in the name, rather than selecting from a preset list.) Presumably, you would elect this only if you provide specific instructions to your DP(s).

Regardless, be aware that your queue is not visible to me or to any other designated picker until it is your turn to pick.

Please refrain from mentioning any undrafted player in this thread. You can use this thread to alert others about your availability, to request volunteers to accept a queue, to raise questions about draft rules or mechanics, to solicit trade offers or announce trades, etc.

Based on recent drafts, it is reasonable to expect that we will complete approximately 24 picks (2 full rounds) per day. Do not assume that you'll have a day off.

After two rounds have been completed, I will start a separate thread for draft rationales. We will then try to keep the rationale thread on a 2 round delay.

I figured it would be good to recap the rules regarding the injury slots:
Three bench slots are available to hold any player. Two additional bench slots will be enabled, but are restricted as “injury slots”, hereafter abbreviated as “IS”.

An NBA player shall be eligible to fill an IS if he is listed in any “informed” source as being injured more seriously than “day-to-day”. Examples of acceptable information sources include (but are not limited to):
RotoWire
RotoWorld
RotoTimes
ESPN
NBA.com
Newspaper stories (citing facts, not speculation).

Once a player appears in an NBA game, he is no longer eligible to fill an IS, even if a published source fails to remove his listing. When a player is no longer IS eligible, the team shall have a limited amount of time to remove that player from the IS, as defined below.

If a manager wishes to move a player into an IS but cannot find a confirming source, he may request that the Commissioner approve the designation. The Commissioner shall use his best judgment in making such a determination.

If any manager believes that another team has improperly moved a player into an IS, he may file a protest with the Commissioner. If any manager disagrees with a Commissioner ruling, he may request a league vote. Six votes shall be required to overturn any Commissioner ruling related to an IS.

Each Wednesday, the Commissioner shall review all rosters to assure that any filled injury slots are appropriate. In the event that an IS is improperly filled, the Commissioner will notify the manager of the violation via the email link at the Yahoo site. The notified manager will have 48 hours to correct the roster or to provide a satisfactory explanation. If a breach remains uncorrected 48 hours after notice, the Commissioner shall have the authority to drop a bench player in order to bring the roster into conformance. The player dropped will be based upon the Commissioner’s judgment as to the best interests of the impacted team.

The Commissioner shall have the latitude to extend the time for curing a breach if he knows that the manager is unreachable and/or unavailable to make the adjustment.

No player which is in an IS slot may be placed in a starting slot on any day unless the bench has been cleared of that injury slot, or unless another player is eligible to replace that player in the vacated IS. In the event of a violation, the Commissioner may elect to void any stats generated by improperly activated player.

After the draft is complete, no player may be picked up as a free agent and immediately placed in an IS. Free agent additions are only IS eligible 10 days after pickup, unless the player has appeared in an NBA game after the pickup and the IS eligibility occurred thereafter. (Drafted players may be immediately “stashed” upon the completion of the draft if they qualify.)

Remember that if you want your queue to be used, you must mark is as "Available". It is not available by default, and does not become available simply by putting players in it.

Just to be clear, Tosh selected Durant with his traded pick, and Species is on the clock. Durant's name doesn't show on the draft's home page due to the way traded picks are displayed, but you can see it if you click on "View all picks", or if you review the draft using the link in post 2.

Looking ahead to Saturday - I'll be away from 8:30am until about 5pm, with no web access at all on Saturday.

First, don't rely on me to make picks from your queue during that interval.

Second, depending on where the draft stands tomorrow morning, I may need someone to pick from my queue. If so, who is available for that duty?

I set up the rationale thread. Please remember to add your rationale in sequence when it is your turn to pick. If you are not ready to post when the time comes, then add a placeholder. And if you are picking from someone else's queue, it is helpful if you could post a placeholder for that person's next rationale as well.

If you are posting overdue rationales, please put them in this thread and I will copy them over.

But it's not easy to use Kafenatid on my iphone.

Can someone please text me the selections every hour or so? I'll be able to make the picks, or set up a DP. I just need easier access to the list of drafted players, so I can check them off my draft sheet.

Please email me, and I will send you my cell #. Thanks!

As I mentioned yesterday, I will be away from 8:30am until about 5pm today (Saturday).

It doesn't look like my next pick will be due before I return. But just in case, I'll be calling my son this afternoon to check.

Do not rely on me to make picks for you this morning or this afternoon. I'll be back this evening.

If you do make picks from queues for other players today, please check this thread first to make sure there are no special instructions or limitations - since I won't be available to clean up the mess if you make picks that you shouldn't have.

As Guru pointed out, please check instructions in this thread first.

My queue was good for the 4th round only. Partly it is my fault: I designated 6 managers as DP so as not to delay the draft, but I guess I should have sent everyone an email.

I just checked about 1 hr ago and it was still Mike D`s pick. I figured that I`ll be home in another hour and that I`ll have ample time to evaluate my roster before deciding on my next pick. In any case I am ok with my 5th round pick, but It would have been fun to overanalyze things :)

We should finish the draft tomorrow, hopefully. However, be aware that I will have limited internet access after 2pm ET on Friday, so if you are relying on a DP, it would be good to have someone else.

I'll try to have all players entered into Yahoo ASAP, after which all undrafted players will be on waivers for 2 days. I may decide to reduce the waiver period from 2 days to one day, just to enable F/A pickups in time for opening day. For that matter, 1 day may be ample for the entire season.

#133 Holt,

I doubt that Mike D is up. He's probably East coast.

yeah, glad to see some picks knocked out though. a 3 man queue is way easier than 6. setting my queue up now.

By the way, thanks to all of you for keeping up with rationales. I've hardly had to bug anyone.

I've drafted for Jason as he had a player in his queue (who was on my short list of players). I assume that was OK. I didn't see any notices about drafting for him this round.

Please post the remainder of your rationales here, and I'll copy them over in the correct sequence.

Here are the draft results I have entered in Yahoo:

http://basketball.fantasysports.yahoo.com/nba/175020/draftresults?drafttab=team

Teams are not listed in the correct pick sequences, but each team's players should be correct. Please review your roster for accuracy. I'll plan to activate the league tomorrow.

# 152 Species,

Tosh took Speights, the pick before. I had him penciled in for my 14th round. I think Parker is a great pick at this stage. I would have taken him if you didn't.

As a Sixer fan, I hope Speights performs way above his draft position.

League has been activated. Undrafted players will clear waivers on Oct 26.
