Subject: RIFC 2008 : Draft discussion
Posted by: Guru
- [330592710] Thu, Aug 14, 2008, 13:44
I have activated the draft, but the clock will not start until Monday. The clock will be set at 6 hours, with a moratorium from 1am-7am EDT. If the clock expires, the next person in line will get to draft, and the skipped drafter will make up his skipped pick whenever he can. Please note: The clock will continue to run on weekends.
People at the endpoints of the draft have only one single time limit to make their consecutive picks. Similarly, the clock will be manually advanced to skip past anyone who already has a pick in arrears, unless other arrangements have been made in advance of that pick.
We will maintain a draft discussion thread here, but it will probably not be used extensively. If you know that you have pending time constraints, please post them in this thread. (e.g., "I'll be away until 6pm ET, so if my pick is due before then, you'll have to wait.") To the extent that you can alert everyone to potential availability issues, you can help others to plan their check-in times accordingly. That's simply good draft etiquette. Please also use this thread to recruit designated pickers, if needed.
If you know you will be away when your next pick is likely to be due, you can can set up a queue in kafenatid and designate one of more managers to pick on your behalf. Your queue will not be visible until it is your turn to pick. Be aware that, as commish, I am able to submit picks for anyone. So even if you have no designated pickers, if you have a queue and it is marked "available", I will be able to make a pick on your behalf when your pick is due. Therefore, if you do not want your queue used, make sure it is marked "unavailable". If your pick is due and your queue is available, I will assume that you want it to be used unless you have posted explicit instructions to the contrary.
I will clear all rosters at the fanball site shortly, and ask that each of you pick up your player as soon as you draft him. I will also attempt to make pickups for teams using a designated picker, so that we can maintain as complete a list of free agents as possible at Fanball.
When drafting, there is no need to draft every position. For example, if you want to skip a kicker, be my guest. However, the Fanball software will force you to fill each of the 14 active slots when you set your lineup for each game. You will not have the ability to leave an active slot blank, so plan your bench needs accordingly. In particular, if you plan to use a player in the opening Thursday night game, every roster slot will need to be filled by the Thursday freeze. You may still make substitutions prior to Sunday for unfrozen players, but you cannot have a player active on Thursday night if any starting slot is vacant at that time.
Note that trades during the draft are allowed. Trades should be announced here, and may include any combination of picks and/or players.
Players who are not yet listed at Fanball may be drafted, and if so, a placeholder player will be assigned to your roster until the player is available. Once the draft is complete, you may no longer sign (or protect) an unlisted player. If a player is listed at Fanball but not yet available at kafenatid, there is a link at the draft site to request the addition of that player. Try to anticipate these needs, so that we do not have to hold up the draft while waiting for a player addition.
Rationales will be expected for each pick, but delayed by two rounds. When we near the end of round two, I will set up a thread for those.
Please refrain from mentioning undrafted players, either in this thread, or in your posted rationale.
Although the clock will not start until Monday, we do intend to get the draft moving this weekend, and I would hope we could complete at least one round before Monday morning. Please plan accordingly, and make arrangements as necessary (or at least post your limitations). Technically, the draft does not start until Friday, but I have activated it early to enable the ability to set queues and designated pickers. Meanwhile, you may go ahead and make your picks early, if they are next in line.

holt has a queue, but his post 190 suggests that it might still be the leftover of his round 18 queue, so I'm going to wait.

I checked his team before the pick to see if he could use a backup QB and he could, so perhaps he would have gone that direction anyway...

Everyone - PLEASE DO NOT SELECT FROM A QUEUE WITHOUT FIRST CHECKING THIS THREAD.

Tell me who it is, and I'll request the addition at kafenatid. In the meantime, we should pick a placeholder - someone who would otherwise not be drafted at all.

We can use Von Hutchins as a placeholder. He's out for the season. Draft him, and declare him at the position of your target player.

As we complete the draft, a few notes on the next steps:
1. Please complete your remaining rationales ASAP and post them here.
2. Go to the Fanball site and fill up your rosters with your draftees.
Once Fanball rosters are set, I will lock all rosters and we will have a period of approx 2 days during which you can submit free agent claims. Claiming priorities will be based on the even round draft order. After claims are processed, free agent add/drops transactions will be allowed (although any players dropped via the claiming process will go through a 2-day waiver period.)

letterj - when you accepted the invitations to the RIFC, you accepted the commitment to provide rationales. The draft is almost over, and you haven't yet produced any.
I still expect them all!
fugazi - you're not much better. You've only turned in two rationales (Round 1-2).
Tree - delinquent from round 7 on
holt - delinquent from round 8 on
Everyone else is current through at least round 19. Thanks.
Let's get these all completed by the weekend.

Guru,
Sorry for my deliquency...will have them all posted by Tuesday. I have been without Net access for a while now and then as IAC posted, we lost our grandfather.
I apologize to ALL for slowing down the draft and for NOT fulfilling my obligations vis-a-vis draft rationales. I always personally enjoy reading them and am sure some are disappointed in me. I am disappointed in myself... :-(

Thanks to those who filled up your team rosters at Fanball. I just finished the job for the four teams who failed to do so.
Rosters are currently locked. Please review your Fanball roster and report any discrepancy, so that I can correct it before the claiming deadline.
You may now place a claim on any free agent. Claim priorities are in the reverse order of the first round of the draft. If you are unfamiliar with the fanball claiming setup, this would be a good time to poke around, even if you do not plan to submit any claims.
Claims will be processed at noon ET on Tuesday, Sept. 2nd. About one hour later, free agents will be available for pickup. Dropped players (whether via claims or F/A pickup) will be subject to a 48 hours waiver period.

sorry so late on rationales. wasn't intentional. recently picked up a used jag. the stereo doesn't work, cruise doesn't work, needs new tires, paint... the windshield washer doesn't seem to be working exactly right. oh, and the antenna too. it's annoying and I'm obsessing about it. been having to throw most of my spare time into research and ebay. it's not a good excuse, but thought I'd better explain.

here's a few more: 7.12 Jeremy Shockey, TE, NO I had decided to fill the WR/TE flex spot at this point, and looking around, there weren’t any WRs i really wanted to take here. There were some decent WR3s still out there, but i felt the production potential of Shockey with Brees throwing to him outweighed any of the other WRs left. Also – both of the guys picking between this and my next pick had 3 WR and zero TE, so i felt that a TE was more apt to go to one of them.
8.03 Anthony Gonzalez, WR, Ind As fast as WR were going, i felt i had to grab someone for my bench. I had looked at Gonzalez with my previous pick, but went TE for the reasons above. Since he was still available here, it seemed a no brainer.
9.12 Ahmad Bradshaw, RB, NYG Perhaps a huge stretch here, but i was feeling desperate for a bye week RB, and there wasn’t anyone left. That’s all this was – a desperation pick, and i hope i don’t regret it.
10.03 Seattle Seahawks, D, Sea Nearly half the teams had defense at this point, and while i was looking at who was left, i saw Seattle was still available. I don’t think they get much recognition, but i also think that’s going to change this season. I think they’re going to be one of the top Defenses available, so i snagged them.
11.12 Michael Boley, LB, Atl It was at this point that i really needed to start getting some IDPs, because they were going quick. In fact, i was surprised at how quickly many of them had been drafted, so i knew i would be grabbing some LBs for this pick and the next, and I would get the best available. Here, it was Boley.
12.03 Thomas Howard, LB, Oak No different than the previous rationale. I just knew i had to go with who i felt was the best one. Hopefully, Howard fits that bill…

getting there...
13.12 Kerry Rhodes, DB, NYJ – still on my IDP run, it was time to grab a DB. Not only was Rhodes one of the best available, to me, he’s one of the best period, so this was a no brainer.
14.03 Steve Slaton, RB, Hous - time to go back on the offensive. I’m not pleased with my RBs at all at this point. Barber is a great pick, but his health is obviously a concern. Maroney is a satisfactory #2, although he seems to consistently underproduce. And Bradshaw is far from an ideal bye week back. Lo and behold, sleeper Steve Slaton is still available, and even though he’s an undersized rookie, he’s got potential for a lot of playing time, so he seemed like the easy pick here.
15.12 Josh Morgan, WR, SF - with Owens, Bowe, and Gonzalez, I am pretty happy with my top 3 WR. It was time to grab another, and I went with Morgan. He was pretty hyped in the pre-season, so I’m hoping that hype comes to fruition.
16.03 JT O’Sullivan, QB, SF - needed to get my QB2 here. Getting a decent second QB can be tough in a league this deep. O’Sullivan is totally unproven, but Mike Martz’ system has turned grocery store bag boys into MVPs, and O’Sullivan’s game play and style fit into that system well. A little bit of a crap shoot here, but by the time Cutler’s bye week comes up, I’ll know whether I can play O’Sullivan, or need to grab someone else.
17.12 Tim Hightower, RB, Ari - jeez. Three of my last four picks are rookies, and the fourth is an unproven QB with little experience. Talk about boom or bust. Anyway, in deep leagues, a lot of RBs help. At least I’ve always felt that way, and Hightower’s got nice projections. He actually projects as an every down back, and he’s playing behind a 30-year-old who has averaged well over 300 carries per season, so I think Hightower’s got a huge chance to be starting by mid-season.
