21.04 Donald Lee TE GNB
Getting towards the end of draft, and filling in a missing position. Lee had a top 10 season last year, and I'd be impressed if he repeats, but top 20-ish would be more reasonable in the Favre-less era.

21.05 Ben Utecht TE CIN
With all the problems at Cincy this year at WR, Utecht may end up being a better than average option this year. He's a receiving TE more than blocking so he'll probably see plenty of action to start the season with injuries & other issues the Bengals have.

I don't know if Bush will ever be a "real" RB. McAllister isn't getting any younger. Thomas had some great moments in the pre-season and was getting some buzz. He's a RB and my other RB's pretty much suck.

A number of rounds back I decided to wait as long as I could to get my second defense. I have the Cowboys who I'll play every week. Instead of getting another top defense, I figured I'd get a team that had a good matchup in the Cowboys' off week. The Panthers fit this with their game against the Raiders.

21.08 Oshiomogho Atogwe, DB, StL

I just like the name.

Seriously, he’s also a DB with a week 5 bye week, both which will afford optimum flexibility in managing my IDPs. And I do have him ranked as the top available DB. And even though he’s been injured (hamstring) for most of August, he has started practicing this week. And as my 7th IDP, I shouldn’t need to start him in week #1 if there is any doubt (assuming the other 6 are healthy).

But mostly, I just like the name.

21.09 Chris Taylor RB HOU
The running back situation in Houston is a mess. Ahman Green (who I drafted earlier) took a pay cut to stay on the team...Chris Brown is not expected to make the 53 man roster cut; and now they're saying Slaton is out with turf toe.

The way I look at it I've got 2/3rds of the possible starting backfield and at this point most of the sources are saying Taylor may be in the lead for most of the carries. Hopefully when the bye weeks roll around Taylor or Green can provide me with a viable sub.

21.10 Matt Wilhelm LB SDG

With Shawn Merriman lost for the 2008 season and another Charger LB suspended for the first four games of the season, Wilhelm becomes an every down linebacker. As a fourth LB, I am happy to land him and believe he can well outproduce where I have drafted him.

This is the point of the draft that I start filling in backup positions. In the last turn (19-20) I was going to take a backup QB but realized I was the only team without one, so I decided to wait, and here I waited again, thinking a backup TE was more important. This is a spec pick mostly, thinking a young guy with upside might do well enough to be a fill-in. It seems he will get plenty of opportunities, maybe even start.

21.14 Leonard Pope TE ARI
Thought it might be a good time to pick up another TE, with many of them going off the board. Pope had 23 catches last year, with 5 of them being for TD’s. With stud recievers getting a lot of attention in Arizona, he should be a good target in the red zone this year.

22.01 Shaun Phillips LB SDG
Don’t know why I didn’t see this guy earlier. Happy no one else did either. He has 20 sacks in the last two seasons. We will see if he can keep it up if Merrimans injury keeps him out, and he becomes more of a target to block. He is disruptive, and created turnovers.

22.02 JaMarcus Russell QB OAK
This was the pick to make my backup QB selection, and let me tell you there wasn't much to choose from. One rookie, A couple second year players, one veteran who could do well but has had arm problems in the past. I had to go with the player who has the strongest upside of the remaining group. Russell is raw and untested, but with an outstanding arm and good tools. The jury is yet to be out but considering Palmer doesn't get a bye til week 8, it will give Russell time to settle in. Here's hoping Palmer doesn't miss time.

22.05 Ryan Torain RB DEN

I sought out a fifth RB who could start and Torain is a player that MIGHT. Also favourable is the fact that he is in a system with a coach (Mike Satanahan) that has produced fantasy gold from the RB position in the past. Is he this year's Selvin Young? On the negative side, he is injured right now and might be placed on Injured Reserve. :-(

Glad to get a good Kicker here; Round 22 seemed to see alot of Kickers go off the board and like most people I'm not willing to waste an earlier pick on the most difficult position to predict. Having said that Vinatieri is one of the top few who are very consistent at this position.

22.07 Shayne Graham, K, Cin
I planned all along to wait until the end to take a kicker, and that’s essentially what I’ve done. My picks in rounds 23 and 24 will most likely be speculative picks, or placeholders to drop in favor of early season F/A pickups. So this pick probably represents the last player who will actually “make the cut”.

I wanted a late bye. Graham’s is week 8, and although there are a few with later byes, I figured eight is enough. He’s accurate, and if the Cincy offense has trouble pushing it into the end zone, he could get some extra FG opportunities. Conversely, if they have trouble getting into FG range, then I’ll just swap him for someone else. In all likelihood, a top-5 kicker (or two or three) will be undrafted anyway.

I considered Mason Crosby as well, but figured that kickers never repeat.

I wasn't planning on getting a kicker this early, but the rest of the managers kind of forced my hand. I went ahead and grabbed Crosby here. I see him as being a top 5 kicker and I was able to get him in the middle of what looks to be a run on kickers.

22.10 Matt Prater K DEN

Seemed to be a trend developing on taking kickers so I decided to take one here. Prater has the job in Denver and the air in Denver seems to give a kicker an advantage. The thin air seems to allow the ball to travel farther. His week 8 bye doesn't hut either. lol

22.14 Randy McMichael, TE, STL

As I mentioned in my Drew Bennett rationale, someone is going to have to catch some passes in the St Louis offense other than Jackson and Holt. I don’t know whether it will be Bennett or McMichael or someone else. McMichael should catch enough to make him worth starting when Watson is on bye, injured or facing a tough matchup. And under the best case scenario, he becomes a key part of their offense, and then he could surpass Watson and be my starter. Seems like decent potential for Rd 22.

23.01 New Orleans Saints, DEF

For this pick I looked at the NFL schedule and tried to find a team that played against a lot of shaky offenses. In addition to divisional games against QBs that consist of an old man, a guy whose arm might fall off, and a rookie, they play the NFC North (4 lovely QBs there), the AFC West, the Redskins and the Niners. Other than SD and Denver, I don’t see a scary offense in there. I don’t think the Saints are that good on D, but with their bumbling opponents, they won’t have to be that good.

Rossum doesn't look to get much action on defense. I put him on a list of players I would look at with the last couple of picks based on his role returning kicks. I figure he'll be a source of some certain points each week if I need some help with my IDP or DB position. And since he plays for the 49ers he should stay busy returning kickoffs (actually, I'm not even sure if their D is that bad, I just felt like talking some trash at this point in the draft to keep it interesting).

I wasn't planning on getting another RB but at the last minute I changed my mind, thinking some depth wouldn't be a bad idea. It was actually a bit of a surprise to see Rhodes still on the board, as he has had success as a backup in the past and will be #2 behind Addai. Between Rhodes and Betts I have two very good backups who will see significant time if their #1's have any injuries.

Was looking for some depth at WR with these picks. I choose Hardy because from what I have read, he could have an imediate impact with Buffalo. He hasn’t been too healty this preseason, but from what I read, when he played, he was able to get involved in the offense.

24.01 Chris Henry WR CIN
I picked Henry here because I figured that he could be on my bench for the first few weeks, and should be worth the space. Don’t know if Chad Johnson or Ocho Cinco whatever his name is now, will be healthy all year, so Henry could be a starter this year.

24.07 Jason Wright, RB, Cle

I really thought Slowhand would take Wright with his last pick, given that he has Jamal Lewis, and Jamal Lewis has a sore hamstring.

Once again, this is strictly a speculative pick. Wright is unlikely to have any value unless Jamal Lewis is injured. The chances are probably good that – barring a Lewis injury in the early weeks – Wright will be dumped sooner than later in favor of some hotter prospect.

I ended the draft without a bye week QB. My 2 QBs are the Dallas tandem of Romo/Johnson, and they don’t have a bye until week 10. I couldn’t imagine taking a marginal QB as a bye-week filler and holding him for 9 weeks. I’ll just take my chances when the time approaches.

I also have no backups at TE, DL, or K. I didn’t consider any of those positions worthy of tying up a bench slot. Those three players all have different bye weeks, and I plan to manage those on the fly.

I also have AZ as my only defense. When I looked at the options available, I couldn’t come up with any reason to want to draft any of them now. (You might say the same thing about Arizona, I realize.) If I strike lighting in a bottle with any of my speculative RBs or WRs, maybe I’ll have someone to trade for a better defense. Or maybe one of the undrafted defenses will turn out to be playable.
